See More: Error 174 on IBM Thinkpad 380D Report • #1 mavis007 September 18, 2009 at 10:17:22 ... changing the cmos battery with a new one is a good idea... now all you need is the correct password ... if one was set prior?... I suspect it had.... glad its an old thinkpad.... just walk over to the nearest waste bin and drop it in there unless you need a paperweight!... ibm security was good then as it is now ... writing to the eeprom ... you wo'nt even be able to use the harddrive on another machine... unlocking both will cost $$$'s..... Posting is provided "AS IS" with no warrantieshttp://img515.imageshack.us/img515/...Grrrr... ....more Report • #2 Gibs August 22, 2010 at 00:52:14 You can over come this problem by resting the Cmos or starving the Cmos of power once it has (i) started to boot or (ii) entered the Cmos user interface...different with each config..On some of the older machines there is a Jumper right next to the battery... by taking the Jumper off and moving it to the other side of the three pins once you have entered Cmos usually does the trick to over right the existing password with the one you enter... or you can temp' remove the battery when at this point with other machines. Compaq has a button that you can press while doing this.. Report • #3 Gibs August 22, 2010 at 01:06:16 for example :Step one power up the machineOnce it has started to boot and located the hardware ie ide drives remove the batterystep two press the appropriate key to enter the Cmos settings.(When Cmos attempts to read Data it wont be able to access the information due to power loss to the Cmos)Step three Find the option to set the password and enter into that option...Step four Replace the battery so Cmos has power again. And ready to over write the existing password with your new one.

The ibm thinkpad 380z X series of extra-thin, extra-light notebooks for mobile workers will come in 8 different models, and join the rest of the revamped ThinkPad line, which also includes the T series for frequent travelers (thin and light), the A series for people looking for a desktop alternative (all-in-one), and the affordable i series. The one-inch thin X series will have 600 MHz Mobile PIII or 500 MHz Mobile Celeron chips and 12.1″ displays, a 56K modem, up to 20 GB hard drives, 64 MB of RAM minimum, and start at 3.1 pounds. The ThinkPad line of notebooks had lost a lot of popularity over the past few years ($1 billion lost in '98, $69 million last quarter) amid component shortages (still continuing, and many ThinkPads are still back-ordered and hard-to-find) and fierce competition from rivals Dell, Compaq, and Toshiba. IBM's notebook sales placed fourth in second quarter sales at 12.1% of the market, behind Dell (21.5), Compaq (16.6), and Toshiba (13.4). Corporate sales of the revamped ThinkPads have exploded recently though, with IBM grabbing 44.6% of the Fortune 500 market in July, up from 28.9% in May; this kind of revival has helped the ThinkPad division approach the break-even point for the first time in years. IBM is also making progress in direct sales,

It might just want to be retired! :-) Its been a while, but I think 174 is a hard drive error, which, due to its age might be expected. You might be able to order a new drive for it, but as for the data on it... gohabs View Public Profile Find all posts by gohabs #3 December 26th, 2006, 09:29 PM sharjen New Member Join Date: Dec 2006 Posts: 7 Im Really Not Worried About The Data,i Havent Long Bought It From Gumtree,i Looked Over It For A Couple Of Days Then It Was Just Sitting There For A Couple Of Weeks And I Turned It On And Thats What I Got!how Much Do You Recon A New Drive Would Be???? sharjen View Public Profile Find all posts by sharjen #4 December 26th, 2006, 09:39 PM gohabs New Member Join Date: Oct 2006 O/S: Windows XP Pro Location: Boston Posts: 18 With XP, you'll want at least a 4gb drive, and then depending on what you'll use it for more. But a drive can cost between $50-$80. I would not get anything bigger than a 20gb drive for the 600E though, it was a good machine in its time, but its getting old and the rest of the components will start to go unless youre gentle with it. Depending on the machine type listed under the laptop... this place has drives, can't speak for their "integrity" though, never used them: http://www.kahlon.com/result.asp?modelid=10544 I had XP on mine too, but its just chugs away on the slow 256mb ram. Might be good just for email and surfing. Good luck! g
