I'm trying to repair a IBM Thinkpad 600 (2645-850) for a friend of mine. At first I got the errors 161, 163 and 173. I purchased a new backup battery from ebay and the code http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f108/thinkpad-600e-161-and-163-error-86475.html 161 disappeared. I'm now stuck with errors 173 and 163. When I turn the computer on these errors appear and I'm taken to the a screen where I can set the date. After I do it I press OK. Then I hear two short beeps and the computer freezes, though I can reboot it by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and start the process all over again. Is the mainboard at fault? ps: The HD is http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=6744 damaged and the battery does not charge. I think these are unrelated issues, right? Any help will be appreciated! The suggestion was to replace the RTC battery. You said you did, so maybe it is bad, and maybe the main battery needs to be replaced so the system will charge. The errors appear to be related to your problems. ... I know the backup battery I bought is good because it stores the date I enter. If I enter the date 2006/04/23 -> press OK -> computer freezes -> turn off -> wait for a while -> turn on again, the date will show up as 2006/04/23, not as 1998/01/01 as it used to. The reason your here is because your IBM Thinkpad 600 series has been working on a dependable mode but has had a error code(s) 161 and 163 at bootup. When your turning on the Thinkpad from a cold boot ibm thinkpad rather than optain a predicable proper boot of your flavor of Windows/Linux or other DOS/non Dos Operating System installed in the Hard Drive you suddently see a Flash Screen displaying the Error Codes 161 163 preceding the memory count on the upper left hand corner of your screen. Abnormal Boot Error Codes 161 & 163 If the above is a description summary of your notebook's condition one of the first choices you might make ibm thinkpad 600 is to have a certified technician or IBM Lenovo Factory trained Technician make the decision for you on the proper diagnosis and fault finding solution. Now to focus more on the problem of your Notebook and the need for perhaps a cmos backup battery related problem that because of it's low internal current has dropped the voltage threshold down to lower than 2.6v. Note that the cmos batteries that were used in the Design aspect of these Notebooks, are referred to as Non-rechargeable Lithium Batteries which have a end of life cycle due to various factors including hermeticity, temperature/environmental issues, Electrolyte and Oxide depletion. These types of batteries diminish in charge based on time and load conditions (the bios chip maintains it's updated firmware biased by this 3 volt backup battery) Replacement Backup Battery Needs: Focus on the need for ESD preca

All the codes appear to relate to the cmos battery, which I've now replaced, and the 192 error has gone. I just can't get past the 161 and 163 error codes - on pressing return it just takes me to the screens telling me that the time and date aren't set - but I can't do anything else with it, and the message just refers to the manual which I have. How on earth do I reset the time and date, when there's no response ?? Please help - I now have 2 of these laptops with the same problem !!Many thanks for your time :o) Posted by madmummy5 on Mar 17, 2009 Want Answer 0 Clicking this will make more experts see the question and we will remind you when it gets answered. 1 Comment Flag More Print this page Share this page × Moderate Help this question get an answer Is this question mis-categorized or about a different product? I have the error codes and procedures, have tried start up with the F1 pressed - nothing changes what comes up - can't get a bios screen to change the date and time ?? When the error codes come up, I get 2 short beeps as well
