According to manual I should check the CMOS backup battery and I found out that CMOS backup battery was bad, when I measured the voltage it showed 0 V. SoI changed the CMOS backup battery, now the battery shows 3 V.Now when I switch on the Thinkpad with the new CMOS battery, I get error codes 163 and 173.The window with error codes 163 and 173 pops up, I press OK, window with time and date settings pops up. I'm trying to repair a IBM Thinkpad 600 (2645-850) for a friend of mine. At first I https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Legacy-Laptops-A-I-V/Thinkpad-600-Error-codes-163-and-173-after-CMOS-battery/td-p/826761 got the errors 161, 163 and 173. I purchased a new backup battery from ebay and the code 161 disappeared. I'm now stuck with errors 173 and 163. When I turn the computer on these errors appear and I'm taken to the a screen where I can set the date. After I do it I press OK. Then I hear two short beeps and http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=6744 the computer freezes, though I can reboot it by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and start the process all over again. Is the mainboard at fault? ps: The HD is damaged and the battery does not charge. I think these are unrelated issues, right? Any help will be appreciated! The suggestion was to replace the RTC battery. You said you did, so maybe it is bad, and maybe the main battery needs to be replaced so the system will charge. The errors appear to be related to your problems. ... I know the backup battery I bought is good because it stores the date I enter. If I enter the date 2006/04/23 -> press OK -> computer freezes -> turn off

Guest the ibm thinkpad 600e that i am working with, on boot i get the three errors 00161, 00192, 00163. i replaced the cmos battery and it made no difference. i have tried getting into the bios by holding F1 before and throughout powerup to no avail. when it finally loads up to something, it is the classic ERROR screen with the three errors listed and the arrow pointing to the manual. i can click on ibm thinkpad ok or cancel and they both do the same thing, basically the ok and cancel button disappear and then i can do nothing but restart the computer with the power switch which then just starts the process over. any help would be greatly appreciated , Dec 13, 2004 #1 Advertisements Bruce Markowitz Guest First of all it is likely a 600, NOT an e, the e does not generally give the 192 (fan) error Are you ibm thinkpad 600e sure, CERTAIN, ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE you put in a new, good CMOS battery. Try another, this is the classic CMOS battery errors. Buy a new battery and try. Many people have had th
