I suspect it had.... glad its an old thinkpad.... just walk over to the nearest waste bin and drop it in there unless you need a paperweight!... ibm security was good then as it is now ... writing to the eeprom ... you wo'nt even be able to use the harddrive on another machine... unlocking both will cost $$$'s..... Posting is provided "AS IS" with no warrantieshttp://img515.imageshack.us/img515/...Grrrr... ....more Report • #2 Gibs August 22, 2010 at 00:52:14 You can over come this problem by resting the Cmos or starving the Cmos of power once it has (i) started to boot or (ii) entered the Cmos user interface...different with each config..On some of the older machines there is a Jumper right next to the battery... by taking the Jumper off and moving it to the other side of the three pins once you have entered Cmos usually does the trick to over right the existing password with the one you enter... or you can temp' remove the battery when at this point with other machines. Compaq has a button that you can press while doing this.. Report • #3 Gib

And it's not booting from a CD at all still. That's why I'm at such a loss... Also the system keeps coming up with the 174 error message...anybody w/ a 600e know what's going on? DanmanX, Apr 4, 2005 #16 Jedi_Master Joined: Mar 12, 2002 Messages: 5,520 With the 600's ( and many Thinkpads ), in the BIOS you will have to go and change http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-95/error-174-on-ibm-thinkpad-380d/170311.html the boot drive(s) ( it's been a while ), but there is a menu where you will have to select the cd-rom as a valid boot drive ( don't remember the menu where it is )... then there is a menu for commit changes ( maybe, like I said it's been a while ), then exit... But...if you can get into the BIOS, and have a bootable CD-ROM, you should be able to install the OS... Like I said, it's been a while since I've been in the BIOS of a https://forums.techguy.org/threads/ibm-thinkpad-600e-massive-error-codes-and-problems.346625/page-2 Thinkpad, but the settings are there... Jedi_Master, Apr 4, 2005 #17 DanmanX Thread Starter Joined: Mar 27, 2005 Messages: 10 Yep, I did change the boot sequence. Still nothing at all. It keeps just defaulting to the 174 error code. DanmanX, Apr 4, 2005 #18 winbob Joined: Aug 2, 2004 Messages: 3,370 "Now i'm getting the error code 174 which I believe is bad system configuration." This is entirely typical...when the battery went bad, you lost the CMOS configuration. Now you have to re-enter it along with the time and date. BUT if the DEFAULT config is good enough, then you only need enter te time and date. winbob, Apr 4, 2005 #19 Jedi_Master Joined: Mar 12, 2002 Messages: 5,520 Can you post the menus that are available in the BIOS ? Jedi_Master, Apr 4, 2005 #20 DanmanX Thread Starter Joined: Mar 27, 2005 Messages: 10 That's the problem. I've entered the date and time. It retains it. But it won't let me boot from the CD/DVD drive. It doesn't seem to make sense.... The test sequence keeps stopping on the memory also. So I'm guessing the memory must be bad....that's what must be throwing it off....oy....I guess I'm never going to get this thing working at all. Double D'oh! The menus for the BIOS are: Config Date/Time Password [No Passwords Set] Start up Test Restart I've tried 50 different combinations and I still can't get it to stop the 174 error code message. I switched the RAM chips spots on the system and still nothing from memory. Also, next I'm going to run 1 RAM
of 174, then goes into the hardware diagnostic mode where i can select to test or restart. - If I restart, it gives http://osdir.com/ml/hardware.ibm.thinkpad/2004-08/msg00083.html me 174 error code and points to an IBM Manual (funny). - If I select to test all hardware, everything tests OK but then gives me the same error code when restart. http://rpc.yoreparo.com/reparacion_de_portatiles/error-00301-y-error-00174-en-ibm-thinkpad-t100919.html Can somebody please help me. - The last thing I was using the PC before it crashed was running the Mcafee virus scan because it seemed that the laptop had the ibm thinkpad MSBLAST.EXE virus. The next thing I know, I got a blue screen indicating a memory dump. - Is this a hardware or a software problem? What is 000174. Internet sites have it as configuration error. - Is my hard drive gone? How do I check that. The test said it was ok. What are some of the steps I can take to ibm thinkpad 600e determine whats wrong. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! The I received CD in a two disk set but doesn't have the product key information on the jewel case. I would suspect some academic user could purchase such machines in bulk with loaded software and then sell unused ones as surpluss. I am wondering what I should do about the key code as the case reads do not contact M$ only the OEM. I will likely use a Key Gen program to get the info and write it down for later use when I do a complete format. The machine has a Novell instead of M$ network config so I will wipe this clean and reinstall Windows after I fix a few minor issues. Reg

Well, error 0174 refers to a configuration issue, usually BIOS-related. Firstly, remove any attached devices such as USB disc drives, PCMCIA cards and the hard drive then reboot Hopefully it will boot and complain that it can't find the operating system. If you still get the problem, enter the BIOS if possible an select default values and try to reboot. If it still doesn't work then it's looking like a motherboard fault and therefore new laptop time. If you can get it past the point at which it gives the error code then put the hdd back in and try again. The technical manual says that it can be a HDD fault causing this problem so you may beed a replacement.
