I haven't found any answers, though. My IBM 600 laptop has decided it doesn't want to boot anymore. Instead I get an error 127 message after it tests the memory and reports the 228800KB's OK. In testing the components from the dialog box that opens I get an "DEV 001", "ERR 42", "FRU 1110" message when testing the systemboard and testing the memory causes the machine to freeze up. Everything else tests OK. The situation is the same regardless of whether I use the onboard battery or the AC adapter. It's the same regardless of whether I use the HD or my emergency boot floppy. I've replaced the CMOS battery and reset the date and time. The machine is identified as type 2645-45U, serial number 78-KNR91 05/99 The platform once booted is Win98SE. The bios is IBET39WW and the CPU is a Pentium II at 300mHz The motherboard is model number FC/01/00 I'm going to keep poking at the problem but I'd sure appreciate it if someone could give me a leg up on what to look for. Thanks in advance. But you can see it in a PC when the hard drive becomes defective, or memory goes awry. Th

The X series of extra-thin, extra-light notebooks for mobile workers will come in 8 different models, and join the rest of the revamped ThinkPad line, which also includes the T series for frequent travelers (thin and light), the A series for people looking for a desktop alternative (all-in-one), and the affordable i series. The one-inch thin X series will have 600 MHz Mobile PIII or 500 MHz Mobile Celeron chips and 12.1″ displays, a 56K modem, up to 20 GB hard drives, 64 MB of RAM minimum, and start at 3.1 pounds. The ThinkPad line of notebooks had lost a lot of popularity over the past few years ($1 billion lost in '98, $69 million last quarter) amid component shortages (still continuing, and many ThinkPads are still back-ordered and hard-to-find) and fierce competition from rivals Dell, Compaq, and Toshiba. IBM's notebook sales placed fourth in second quarter sales at 12.1% of the market, behind Dell (21.5), Compaq (16.6), and Toshiba (13.4). Corporate sales of the revamped ThinkPads have exploded recently though, with IBM grabbing 44.6% of the Fortune 500 market in July, up from 28.9% in May; this kind of revival has helped the ThinkPad division approach the break-even point for the first time in years. Try to take the main battery out and disconnect from the mains for a short while, then reconnect the ac adapter and power on. I will expect that you will be prompted to set ibm thinkpad 600e date and time, in which case the cmos battery is flat. If not, then try running the diagnostics again, without the main battery. Change the CMOS battery. My 600E had a similar issue, but it was stone dead. I didn't want to spend money if I didn't need to (I had no idea of the thinkpads' true condidtion at the time), so I clipped the wires off the old battery and just taped them to a newer (different size, but the electrons don't mind) and re-installed it. I used a CR2032 from a spare desktop PC I had. Fixed it. Joe _________________Common sense to some of us is unfortunately the higher education others strive to attain. Pulling the main battery out of it, which was deader than a doornail in anycase, did the trick. Well done. Thanx. _________________310ED, 570, 570E,
