When I turn the machine on it freezes after the IBM Thinkpad Logo screen and shows ERROR 0175: BAD CRC1, STOP POST TASK. I've done quite a bit of research on this error online and on the forum here. After initially calling IBM support, they recommended that I buy and replace the CMOS battery. I replaced the battery yesterday, but I'm still experiencing the same error and the machine is still failing to boot properly. I now suspect that there is a malfunction with the system board. I researched and found another site last night (www.allservice.ro) that offers software to fix this CRC1 Error, but this requires soldering the eeprom chip underneath the RAM cards, providing a dump and rewriting the eeprom. With my lack of computer hardware experience, I'm afraid that if I do this, I could permanently damage the machine. I located one person, who was very highly recommended, that can repair the CRC error for $100 or replace the system board for $200, but this is without any guarantees that the CRC error will or will not return. Does anyone have any new advice on fixing this BAD CRC1 error for the T series? Is the cost of this repair worth it....? If not, I am considering buying another T21 and inserting my old hard drive into the machine for recovery. Will my hardrive (Hitachi Travelstar 20GB) be compatible with any T21 model? I can't

This error is generated due to a couple of different reasons. First, there may actually be a problem with the power circuitry and the CRC function is actually doing it's job reporting the error. There are several http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/31761/ tests you can perform (described below) to tell if this is the case with your system. Second, this bad CRC error can be generated by sudden power loss to the system, especially if the system loses power during boot up or POST process. If this is the case with your system, we can repair this error. There is some work involved and the cost mentioned below is well justified. Below is the standard reply email that we send to CRC inquiries that will hopefully help you determine if your system is a good candidate for a CRC recovery. ========================================= In some rare cases there really is a problem with the system board and the CRC checksum routine is actually doing it's job. If this is the case, you will see erratic power behavior, random shutdowns / freezing / erratic power behavior on power up, before the CRC error surfaced. We cannot guarantee our CRC correction will last when power problems exist in the motherboard. Unfortunately, we cannot refund the CRC recovery cost. Our time is money and the programmers we hire to correct the CRC information cost money. With that said... Most of the time, CRC errors are generated from a password removal attempt or sudden (user created) "Shutdown" or "Restart" condition and these situations are repairable. How can yo
