Additionally, when trying to visit any website, Internet Explore would redirect to http:/// and display a "address is not valid" error. Fortunately, the solution in all of these cases was rather simple. The follow is not guaranteed to solve all Internet connectivity problems. There are many, many reasons you may not be able to access websites: firewalls, malware, damaged hardware, etc. The solution here seems to work in most cases where Internet Explorer (or your browser of choice) is giving you the "address is not valid" error message for ALL websites you attempt to visit. This problem seems to be caused by an incorrectly configured proxy server. In all the cases I have seen, this results from a recently removed malware infection. I won't go into what proxy servers are used for here, but if you are curious check out Wikipedia. Here is what you need to do to reset th

LogMeIn.com) to the proper internet explorer address IP address. There are two reasons why this could happen. Problems with your DNS resolving our IP Address Open a Run box. (Press the Windows key and the R key at the same time). In the Run box, type cmd and click OK.In the command prompt, type ipconfig /flushdns and press the Enter key. Problem with proxy You may get this error in conjunction with accessing the Internet via a proxy server, please ensure the address is valid in Internet Explorer > Tools Options > Connections > LAN Settings. If you do not have, or are unaware of, a proxy server, please ensure that the only box checked off is Automatically Detect Settings, and that the proxy information within LogMeIn is removed. If you do use a proxy, the address and port info should be correct in IE, and match in LogMeIn. To check the proxy settings in LogMeIn, please click on the LogMeIn tray icon and select Open LogMeIn. When the window opens, click Options > Preferences > Advanced Tab. Scroll down to the Proxy Settings and confirm the proxy server address & port. In most cases, this should resolve the issue. If not, you will likely need to involve the person that maintains your network, or your ISP if applicable, to fix the issue with your DNS not being able to resolve our service IP addresses. anti-malware software. Specifically, they add a rogue proxy server to intercept your connections to the web. In some cases, after killing the evil malware, you may find that you are unable to use Internet Explorer to open a web page. The error you see will likely say something to the effect of "Address Not Valid", with a location in the IE location bar showing "http:///": The cause of this is that your anti-malware program has deleted the rogue proxy server, but left the basic manual proxy setting in place. So IE essentially tries to connect to a blank proxy server. The solution is easy: open IE, and go to "Tools --> Internet Options --> Connections --> LAN Settings". Then, simply UNcheck the box that says to "Use a proxy server", and check the box to "Automatically detect settings" instead. After that, just click OK and Apply your new settings, and you should be good to go. Of course, the better longterm solutin is to use Mozilla Firefox instead, but that is another story for another time! Copyright © 2007 J.R. Halterlein
