rise to the top CRC error during extraction of downloaded compressed tar. Tar file is intact up vote 1 down vote favorite I have downloaded a compressed file from http://ds.arm.com/downloads/. File details are DS500-BN-00019-r5p0-21rel1.tgz(64 bit) When I try to extract this file using the following command tar -zxvf DS500-BN-00019-r5p0-21rel1.tgz I receive the following error gzip: stdin: invalid compressed data--crc error tar: Child returned status 1 tar: Error is not gunzip crc error recoverable: exiting now The same output I got if I try to view contents using "-tzf" option. In different ubuntu environment file extracts successfully. tar is failing to extract only in my ubuntu environment. If I use 7z, I observe the following failure message 7-Zip [64] 9.20 Copyright (c) 1999-2010 Igor Pavlov 2010-11-18 p7zip Version 9.20 (locale=en_IN,Utf16=on,HugeFiles=on,4 CPUs) Processing archive: DS500-BN-00019-r5p0-21rel1.tgz Extracting DS500-BN-00019-r5p0-21rel1.tar CRC Failed Sub items Errors: 1 This behavior is observed for all compressed files downloaded from internet. If I use compressed files from different ubuntu environment or from my system itself, I dont observe this behavior. I suspect this is being observed only in my ubuntu environment. Kindly help me in resolving this issue. Following are the environment details Ubuntu 12.04 $ tar --version tar (GNU tar) 1.26 ... $ gzip --version gzip 1.4 ... Gunzip Invalid Compressed Data--format Violated
Website "unzip" reporting CRC errors on large files Quote Postby Nagle » 2012/03/17 20:34:34 "unzip" on a CentOS server ("CentOS release 6.2 (Final)", kernel "2.6.32-220.2.1.el6.x86_64") is reporting CRC errors on a 1.2GB file I created using Windows File Manager. But it's not. I transferred the file back from the CentOS machine to the Windows machine (using FileZilla in "sftp" mode), and compared it with the original using "COMP":>compName of first file to compare: infotsql.zipName of second file to compare: infotsql\badcrc\infotsql.zipOption:Comparing infotsql.zip and infotsql\badcrc\infotsql.zip...Files compare OKSo, after a round-trip through SFTP to and from the server, the files match bit for bit. The file was NOT corrupted during transfer.Back on the Windows machine, I run the "test" function of 7-Zip on both (identical) versions of the file. Z-Zip reports no problems. So the file has valid CRCs.Just to be thorough, I decompress the file again on the CentOS machine. The output is exactly the same. So it's not an intermittent hardware error. I also run "memtest" for an hour to check the server's memory. It finds no problems.Having eliminated the possibility of file corruption, I have to now look for problem

I have replaced the hard-drive, loaded with a clone of the old hard-drive, but I still get the error. If there are any, replace your RAM. If there aren't, get a LiveCD containing smartmontools package from here, boot from it and check your disks' SMART status (as well as run self-tests to detect bad sectors). If everything passes, the issue is elsewhere - however, it's likely that one of the above tests will fail. share|improve this answer answered May 17 '09 at 17:20 community wiki ASk memtest86 is an excellent tool for this- make sure you let it run overnight to really test everything. –Tim Howland May 18 '09 at 0:37 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote Similar issue discussed here, also this could be due a CRC checksum failure that is detected at the time the kernel is decompressed. If the new hard drive has a copy of the corrupted file, it makes sense that you would see the same result.
