Hi All I had taken a backup of workspace with help of "tar" and "gz" command and transfered the file to other machine with "scp" command.i tried to extract the file with following command in the other machine $gzip -d file_name.tar.gz I recived the following error zip: file_name.tar.gz: invalid compressed data--crc error Problem:I dont have original source file. File details are DS500-BN-00019-r5p0-21rel1.tgz(64 bit) When I try to extract this file using the following command tar -zxvf DS500-BN-00019-r5p0-21rel1.tgz I receive the following error gzip: stdin: invalid compressed data--crc error tar: Child returned status 1 tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now The same output I got if I try to view contents using "-tzf" option. In different ubuntu environment file extracts successfully. tar is failing to extract only in my ubuntu environment. If I use 7z, I observe the following failure message 7-Zip [64] 9.20 Copyright (c) 1999-2010 Igor Pavlov 2010-11-18 p7zip Version 9.20 (locale=en_IN,Utf16=on,HugeFiles=on,4 CPUs) Processing archive: DS500-BN-00019-r5p0-21rel1.tgz Extracting DS500-BN-00019-r5p0-21rel1.tar CRC Failed Sub items Errors: 1 This behavior is observed for all compressed files downloaded from internet. If I use compressed files from different ubuntu environment or from my system itself, I dont observe this behavior. I suspect this is be

Run strace gunzip on the file. This will print the last bytes read from the file which might help you identify the point in file where corruption occurs. Run a debug build of gunzip under gdb. Try to correct the corrupted section (you have to be extra lucky to be able to do that) and see if it can continue to the end of the file. Going past the corrupted part of the file will be tricky. The man page gives pointers to the format, but I'd look for other options in Google. Are you sure this is compressed with gzip? You might be able to get it to work with unix2dos Backup-28--Jun--2011--Tuesday.tar.gz, but if not, you'll have to try transferring it again, making sure it uses binary mode. share|improve this answer answered Jun 28 '11 at 5:27 dtbarne 11212 Dtbarne, I tried unix2dos conversion but no luck :-) ,still the same error is returning...
