when I restarted my PC I wasn't able to access it. So I tried to restore its firmware but I had this error. I tried the same thing on the other PC (where the iPod worked) without success. The same result I had and with my laptop on the work - so 3 copleately different PCs - the same story. FYI: It was formated as a key memory at the same time as a MP3 player, so now I can see Removable Disk in the Windows explorer but the is nothing inside. Please HELP! Do I have to throw it away? Reset the IPod thrice and then connect it to the computer/Laptop.2. Then Format the Removable drive in "My computer" to FAT 32 type.3. Then try restoring the IPod Using IPod Updater.4. Try the same steps in all the USB ports if it fails and then try in a different computer..5. If possible use another shuffle and try the sane steps..6. If another shuffle works fine, then send this iPod (with error) for service.. For sending it to service please visit the link "depot.info.apple.com/" Also Refer the link "http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302204"Please revert back on clarifications...Good luck.Bye Helpful

I've never had problems copying songs into it, through iTunes, but from the beginning I never had much success using it as a portable hard drive. Whenever I tried copying large files, or many files, into it, it would hang and reboot after a while. The same happens http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/5961/how-to-fix-an-ipod-classic-with-a-bad-hard-drive when I tried copying videos into it, also through iTunes, to the extension that iTunes complains that it can't read or write to the iPod. Usually, restoring the iPod returns it to the state that I can copy songs again, but when I increase the usage to videos or large files the trouble starts again. I'm pretty convinced it has a bad hard drive, but it is not covered by warranty anymore. Fixing it at a local Apple representative would cost as much as buying a new one, and the ifixit howto is pretty much discouraging, besides stating that video iPod use special hard drives and they don't sell them anymore. I was hoping that mounting the iPod in disk mode and running a check disk would mark the bad sectors and allow me use it as a <160GB iPod, but I can't find what tool would do that on the Mac. What do you recommend? How should I proceed? ipod share|improve this question asked Jan 5 '11 at 9:51 lpacheco 1,5982922 add a comment| 4 Answers 4 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote accepted You can try to diagnose if the disk has a problem with the diagnostic mode. Don't trash an iPod with bad blocks on the drive Jan 24, '11 07:30:00AM • Contributed by: bryo I had bad blocks on my iPod classic 120gb. I was told to trash it and http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20101231062858933 by a certified technician but I wouldn't give up. I tried reformating at least 50 times. My iPod would restore and show up in iTunes no problem but I couldn't copy more than 2gb https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/52450/Can't+Restore+iPod-+unknown+error+occurred+(1416) of data before iTunes would hang. I also tried reformating the iPod with Disk Utility. I was able to format but not with 'zero out data' selected (recommended for fixing bad blocks). I even ipod classic tried changing the partition map through terminal but was unsuccessful. You can try the following procedure which worked for me.Caution: This will erase all data on your iPod. Using iTunes restore iPod. Uncheck both the 'Sync Music Automatically' check box and the 'open iTunes when this iPod is connected' checkbox. Eject the iPod and close iTunes. Restart the iPod in disk mode (Menu+Select then Menu+Play/Pause). Open Disk Utility, and ipod classic hard in the sidebar select 'Apple iPod Media.' Go to File » New » Disk Image from 'disk1' (or whatever name appears last on this menu). Save the disk image on your HD. You will later use it to restore one of the partitions. Now, again select 'Apple iPod Media' in the Disk Utility sidebar, and then the 'Partition' tab. Under the 'Volume Schemes' pulldown menu select '2 partitions.' Select the first partition and assign it a size of 4gb or 6gb (I think this was large enough to 'skip' the bad sector). Under the format pulldown menu select 'Free Space.' Select the second partition and under the format pulldown menu select 'Mac OS Extended (journaled)' and name the partition (you can later change the name). Now click 'Apply' in the bottom right corner In the Disk Utility sidebar you should now see the disk 'Apple iPod Media', as seen before, and beneath it should be the partition you named earlier. Click on the icon of the new named partition in the sidebar and it's capacity should be the full capacity of the disk minus the amount allocated to the partition 'Free Space' (e.g. my iPod Classic is 120gb and I allocated 6gb to the 'Fre
