Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. Your iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for *Manual Test*, then select *IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* to reveal your stats. I've tried to reset it (Holding down Menu and Select button, then holding down the play/pause button and select button) but it just continued on to the red X. That doesn't work at all. I've tried to set it into disc mode but that doesn't work either. I've also put it into diagnostics and run all of the tests, and they've all cleared through except for the hard drive test, I'll click HDD SPEC then [open device] appears, a couple of seconds later [Can't Open Device] comes up with "ERROR! Diag Halt" flashing at the bottom, same with the HDSMARTdata test. So basically from everything I've read online, my hard drive has crashed. I'm just wondering if there is any way I can manually repair it without having to send it in and getting it replaced. Any suggestions would be great, Also, what does this mean for the music on my IPod? Everything I have is on there, and its going to suck if everything gets taken off. Ps. I'm not too sure about the warranty, I think it has expired/ 08-09-2010, 10:50 AM #2 ipod rescue Re

I've never had problems copying songs into it, through iTunes, but from the beginning I never had much success using it as a portable hard error diag halt drive. Whenever I tried copying large files, or many files, into it, it would hang and reboot after a while. The same happens when I tried copying videos into it, also through iTunes, to the extension that iTunes complains that it can't read or write to the iPod. Usually, restoring the iPod returns it to the state that I can copy songs again, but when I increase the usage to videos or large files the trouble starts again. I'm pretty convinced it has a bad hard drive, but it is not covered by warranty anymore. Fixing it at a local Apple representative would cost as much as buying a new one, and the ifixit howto is pretty much discouraging, besides stating that video iPod use special hard drives and they don't sell them anymore. I was hoping that mounting the iPod in disk mode and running a check disk would mark the bad sectors and allow me use it as a <160GB iPod, but I can't find what tool would do that on the Mac. What do you recommend? How should I proceed? ipod share|improve this question asked Jan 5 '11 at 9:51
One possible fix for iPods with hard drive issues Jan 22, '07 07:30:01AM • Contributed by: Anonymous My iPod suddenly began hanging when playing a song, and would then freeze. After resetting it, the Apple logo came up, and there was a distinct clicking sound as the hard drive spun up, died, spun up, clicked, and died again. This repeated several times while the Apple logo was showing, and then progressed to a sad iPod picture (and at other times, a folder question mark picture). Plugging it into the computer didn't do much -- it usually did the same thing with the Apple logo and wouldn't start up. Rarely, it would get past that point and iTunes would inform me that the iPod is corrupt and needed restoring. I searched a bit online, and found that this is caused by a faulty hard drive (specifically, loose parts in the hard drive). But to my joy, there is a relatively easy fix. Open up the iPod, and place a folded-in-half business card (or equivalent substitute) between the outer metal casing and the hard drive itself. This puts a small amount of pressure on the hard drive, and has permanently fixed every iPod I've tried it on. Both my iPod, and two of my friends' iPods, have had this issue -- I think it is more common then people realize. An easy $300 save. [robg adds: I haven't tested this on my iPod, and would probably only recommend it as a last-chance fix. But if it's the difference between recycling and continuing to use, it might be worth a shot.
