question Anybody can answer The best answers are voted up and rise to the top Kernel panic when trying to install ubuntu up vote 0 down vote favorite Summary: When trying to install Ubuntu i get Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(2,0) and the other questions adressing the same error doesn't help since all of them requires init not tainted kernel panic me to do things from within ubuntu or to boot ubuntu in recovery mode but I don't have ubuntu installed so I can't do that. Long version: I have had Uberstudent (based on Ubuntu) working for a week on my Acer 720p Chromebook. Then I ran a script to fix the touchpad(which usually doesn't work properly at first with this type of laptop). After rebooting after running this script the laptop couldn't find wifi and sudo commands didn't work(it just loaded forever. I tried things like "sudo echo "hello""). So I decided to reinstall the OS. So I reinstalled Chrome OS and did a "powerwash". When repeating the exact process(using LiveUSB with UNetbootin) I did last week it didn't work. After choosing the "Start Uberstudent" option from the blue UNetbootin-menu it stopped and displayed the error: Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(2,0) I have tried switching usb and I tried installing Ubuntu instead. Both with the same result. There are other similar questions on this site. The difference is that all of those were solved by booting into Ubuntu and doing t

What is the solution to this problem? All of a sudden some basic commands like ls and sudo were not working (by mistake I deleted some files in the root folder). I was getting a error like bash- /usr/bin no such directory. I restarted my PC after which it displays "kernel panic". How to resolve this issue. You should use a live distro to backup your own data on /home/yourname, then reinstall. –MariusMatutiae Jun 16 '14 at 10:22 Yes, deleting files in the root folder is usually a bad idea. I didn't notice @MariusMatutiae had already mentioned using a live distro. It means something like a LiveCD, a rescue disk. Something you can boot when the OS on your hard drive won't boot. –Tom Zych Jun 16 '14 at 11:03 A live distro is a Linux distro mounted either on a USB stick, or on a CD/DVD. They are usually produced to install the system on a pc, but often offer the choice of not installing, and using the live stick as a repair medium. Ubuntu makes a very good one, even for beginners. Just make sure that, when you are presented with: Install Ubuntu and Try it without installing it, you choose Try it without installing. Then copy the contents of your pc's /home directory to an external disk, something like a USB hard disk. Then you are ready to re-install. –MariusMatut
