One https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2492477 uses the default instance (MSSQLSERVER) and the other we've specified a named instance.I am trying to create a linked server from the default instance to the named instance but I keep getting the error message;TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio------------------------------The linked server has been created but failed a connection test. Do you want to keep the linked server?------------------------------ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:An exception occurred while executing http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic1118558-391-1.aspx a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)------------------------------SQL Server Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]. OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "[SEV-DB01\ISYS]" returned message "Login timeout expired".OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "[SEV-DB01\ISYS]" returned message "A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. For more information see SQL Server Books Online.". All services are set to use a domain user account, except the browser service which is set to 'Local Service'. Solved sql server 2005 error 65535 when connecting with sql agent Posted linked server on 2009-02-02 MS SQL Server 2005 1 Verified Solution 7 Comments 3,633 Views Last Modified: 2013-11-19 I'm trying to get SQL server agent running on my sql server 2005. It appears to start up fine, but when I try to run a job, I get the following errors: [298] SQLServer Error: 65535, SQL Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]. [SQLSTATE 08001] mapping for the [165] ODBC Error: 0, Login timeout expired [SQLSTATE HYT00] [298] SQLServer Error: 65535, An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. [SQLSTATE 08001] [382] Logon to server 'COMPUTERNAME' failed (ConnAttemptCachableOp) I've looked at the server and it does appear to allow remote connections. I'm wondering why I'd get this message though since sql agent is on the local server. I've tried changing the account that SQL Server Agent uses and it doesn't seem to matter. Does anyone has any suggestions? 0 Question by:leos_ Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 29 Best Solution byQPR does this article help? http://blogs.msdn.com/sql_protocols/archive/2007/05/13/sql-network-interfaces-error-26-error-locating-server-instance-specified.aspx Go to Solution 7 Comments LVL 29 Overall: Level 29 MS SQL Server 2005 11 Message Expert Comment by:QPR2009-02-02 who is the owner of the "job"? does that owner have sysadmin rights on the server? 0 LVL 29 Overall: Level 29 MS SQL Server 2005 11 Message Accepted Solution by:QPR2009-02-02 does this article help? http://blogs.msdn.com/sql_protocols/archive/2007/05/13/sql-network-interfaces-error-26-error-locating-server-instance-spec
