WHEA detects a machine check exception, it displays the error in a Blue Screen of Death, with the following parameters (which vary, but the first parameter is always 0x0 machine check error windows xp for a machine check exception):[1] *** STOP: 0x00000124 (0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000) On Linux, a process (such as klogd[2]) writes a message to the kernel log and/or the console screen (usually only to the console when the error is non-recoverable and the machine crashes as a result): CPU 0: Machine Check Exception: 0000000000000004 Bank 2: f200200000000863 Kernel machine check error linux panic: CPU context corrupt The error usually occurs due to failure or overstressing of hardware components where the error cannot be more specifically identified with a different error message.[clarification needed] Diagnosing the error message can be difficult, although Intel Pentium processors do generate more specific codes which can be decoded by contacting the manufacturer.[citation needed] Most MCEs require a restart of the system before users can continue normal operation, and indicate a long-term problem of a general nature.[citation needed] Contents 1 Problem types 2 Possible causes 3 Decoding MCEs 3.1 Programs to Decode MCEs 4 See also 5 References 6 External links Problem types[edit] Most of these errors relate specifically to the Pentium processor family. Similar errors may occur on other processors and will cause similar problems. Some of the main hardware problems that cause MCEs include: System bus errors: (error communicating between the processor and the motherboard). Memory errors: parity checking detects when a memory error has occurred. Error correction code (ECC) can correct limited memory errors so that pro

I have created a startup USB with the built-in startup disk creator and I have also tried using unetbootin, both give me this error on boot-up, just a black screen with the message "Machine check error". I http://askubuntu.com/questions/362063/machine-check-error-when-booting-from-usb am using an ASUS zenbook UX31. It is working fine otherwise, and I have boot from USB without problems with other versions of Ubuntu several times before. I have seen this duplicate but the accepted answer there is a workaround, not a solution - I can not boot from CD because I am using an ultrabook without any CD drive. boot usb 13.10 share|improve this question asked Oct 19 '13 at 20:14 wim 3,942185488 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote accepted The problem is related to "secure boot" feature. The fix is toggling the UEFI setting in BIOS. share|improve this answer answered Oct 22 '13 at 1:33 wim 3,942185488 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote I had the same problem on my Toshiba Satellite p850, "Machine check error". After disabling "Virtualization Technology" in BIOS I could boot from USB stick without problems. Edit: On further investigation, it seems to require toggling rather than disabling. Machine check exceptions (MCEs) can occur for a variety of reasons ranging from undesired or out-of-spec voltages from the power supply, from cosmic radiation flipping bits in memory DIMMs or the CPU, or from other miscellaneous faults, including faulty software triggering hardware errors.
