TV, Playstation, or whatever via DLNA. No more external hdd's lying around, no more codec-not-supported issues, instead, you now have firewall and networking issues whenever you want to watch a movie from http://www.cluelesstrader.com/setup-ps3-media-server-as-a-windows-service/ your collection. Let the fun begin! While PMS works pretty simple when using the https://github.com/UniversalMediaServer/UniversalMediaServer/wiki/Installation interface, installing the service on a windows based server is a little bit of pain. Here are my steps on Win7 x64. 1. Install PMS as usual. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\PS3 Media Server 1 C:\Program Files (x86)\PS3 Media Server and run pms.exe as admin. 3. Under General Configuration, click Install as Windows Service. 4. Run services.msc from the media server start menu and change the startup type from manual to automatic. 5. Open the firewall settings (run: wf.msc), go to Inbound Rules. There should be two rules called Java(TM) Platform SE binary for the PMS java executable: C:\program files (x86)\ps3 media server\jre64\bin\javaw.exe 1 C:\program files (x86)\ps3 media server\jre64\bin\javaw.exe One is for TCP, the other one for UDP. If they are not there yet, add them. I recommend to allow private networks only (under Advanced ps3 media server > Profile) and block edge traversal, but that depends on your network environment. You only need this rule inbound. 6. Open the PMS port (5001 by default) for TCP and UDP inbound traffic. Add a new inbound rule, select Port, specify TCP over whatever port your PMS uses, and allow the traffic for your desired networks - again, I recommend sticking to the defaults and use port 5001, private networks only. Repeat this for UDP. 7. Restart the service. Sometimes you may have to kill old instances manually, or just do a reboot. PMS should now start with windows and be discoverable from your TV. If you want to put UMS somewhere other than it's default location enter it here, if not select Next This Setup page allows advanced users to change the Java Heap values and conduct a clean UMS install (wipes out any previous UMS saved values, e.g Shared Folders etc.). Select Next to continue Caution: Only change Java Heap values if you know what your doing, UMS uses default values that have been tested over time. UMS will Install, this process could take 2-3 mins. UMS has finished installing. Select Finish to run UMS, To create a shortcut Check the appropriate Check box and Select Finish. Installation and start of UMS on Linux You also need to have Java installed on Linux. You should set environment variable JAVA_HOME to JRE installation path. After that you have to decompress the setup archive for Linux with: > > tar xzf filename.tgz The following packages are recommended and will automatically be used by UMS if they are installed: MediaInfo is recommended for more accurate detection of media information.
