Starting Outlook in safe mode, which starts Outlook without add-ins loaded, can tell you if an add-in is the problem. Note: If you enabled an ABBYY FineReader add-in, an outdated version of the software might cause an Outlook cannot open outlook 2016 startup error. For more information, see Office programs may crash with the FineReader add-in installed. Start Outlook in safe mode Choose Start > Run. Type Outlook /safe, and choose OK. In the Choose Profiles dialog box, accept the default setting of Outlook and choose OK. If prompted, enter your password and choose Accept. Tips: How do you know you're working in safe mode? You'll see a label similar to the one below at the top of the screen. The Outlook icon on your taskbar also alerts you the program isn't operating normally. If Outlook does start in safe mode, then the problem is likely with one of your add-ins. You'll need to disable all of your add-ins before restarting Outlook. Disable add-ins In the upper-left corner of Outlook, choose File > Options > Add-ins. At the bottom of the View and manage Office Add-ins, make sure the Manage box shows COM Add-ins, and then choose Go. As a precaution, when the COM Add-ins listing of your current add-ins opens, do one of the following: Manually record the title of every selected add-in listed under Available Add-ins. or Take a screenshot of the property sheet and save the image to a location of your choice. After you've captured the titles of the selected add-ins, clear all selected check boxes, and then choose OK. Caution: Click a check box to clear it. Don't select an add-in and choose Remove. I believe the site owner Ian had a similar problem and microsoft outlook I think he said that he ran the native System File Checker. Admin Command Prompt sfc /scannow and that fixed it for him. You might give that a try. And please confirm that your upgrade has all three of the subsequent Windows Updates installed. Trouble, Jul 30, 2015 #2 Ian likes this. I did a bit of searching and resetting the navigation pane may do the trick for you. Could you try running "outlook.exe /resetnavpane" please? Just press Windows Key + R to bring up the run box. If that doesn't work, see if Outlook works in safe mode by running "outlook.exe /safe" and select your default profile when prompted. 2 Comments Outlook users getting error "Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. The operation failed." usually indicates that the outlook data file, where outlook has all the information stored cannot be opened. Before going through the steps listed below, make sure that you are not running any back up software's that is supposed to backup the data file, because if the file is in use, then Outlook will not be able to access the file. Secondly, make sure that the file has not been moved from it's original location. Add-in's can also interrupt Outlook from accessing the data file. Mehotd 1: Reset Navigation Pane In this solution, we will reset the navigation pane settings in Outlook. Close all applications. Hold Windows key and press R. In the run dialog, type Outlook.exe /resetnavpane and press Enter. If Outlook starts fine, you're good. Close and Re-open normally. If it still wont open after resetting the navigation pane, or if it gives an error, close/exit out of any error pop-ups and rename the Outlook.xml file to Outlook.xml.old. To do this, Hold the Windows Key and Press R. In the run dialog box type %appdata%\Microsoft\Outlook and press Enter. Right click the Outlook.xml file and choose rename, and add .old to the end of the file. Now open Outlook to see if it works or not, if it still won't work, then proceed with the Method 2. Method 2: Start Outlook in Safe Mode Hold Windows key and press R. In the run dialog, type outlook.exe /safe and press Enter. PRO TIP: If the issue is with your computer or a laptop/notebook you should try using the Reimage Plus Software which can scan the repositories and replace corrupt and missing files. This works in most cases, where the issue is originated due to a system corruption. You can download Reimage Plus by Clicking Here You will be asked which profile to use when logging in. If there is only one profile, then it will be selected by default. Click OK. If it works in Safe Mode, then the is likely to be a conflicting or corrupt add-in. Disable all add-ins and then open Outlook to confirm, if it works then enable add-in one by one until you get to the one which stops Outlook. To disable add-ins, click File -> Options -> Add-ins -> COM Add-ins -> Manage -> Go Uncheck all the items in Add-Ins available list and click OK. Now test. If it still won't work then Hold the Windows Key a
