up Apache httpd setup and installation up vote 67 down vote favorite 17 This is my first time I am trying to install Apache HTTP server locally in my box as a regular user (non-root). I have downloaded Apache 2.4.1 version of Apache HTTP server [http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi]. However when I am trying to build and install locally in my box I am getting below configure: error: cannot use an external apr with the bundled apr-util error: httpd/httpd-2.4.1 1059> ./configure checking for chosen layout... Apache checking for working mkdir -p... yes checking for grep that handles long lines and -e... /bin/grep checking for egrep... /bin/grep -E checking build system type... x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu checking host system type... x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu checking target system type... x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu Configuring Apache Portable Runtime library ... checking for APR... no configure: error: APR not found. Please read the documentation. I am not sure what dependency it is looking for - I mean the download package does not contains it? What I need to do to build / deploy Apache HTTP server? Thanks in advance. apache apr share|improve this question edited Jun 6 '14 at 1:49 Oleg Mikheev 9,30954175 asked Feb 24 '12 at 19:30 Prakash 1,82563075 3 Off-topic; belongs on Server Fault –Jim Garrison Feb 25 '12 at 2:52 1 @JimGarrison, Then why is it not closed / moved? –Pacerier Jun 25 '15 at 12:05 add a comment| 8 Answers 8 active oldest votes up vote 99 down vote accepted When it tells you Please read documentation it means that you should go read Apache documentation ( http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/install.html ) wh

I downloaded the source and put APR & APR-util in the srclib folder, then changed directories to ./srclib/apr and ran: ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apr sudo checking apr not make sudo make install This seemed to install APR ok, but when I run ./configure from the apr-util directory, I receive the error: configure: error: APR could not be located. Please use the --with-apr option. Using ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apr-util --with-apr=/usr/local/apr, the error becomes: checking for APR... configure: error: the --with-apr parameter is incorrect. It must specify an install prefix, a build directory, or an apr-config file. It must specify an install prefix, a build directory, or an apr-config file. Then it works with --prefix=/usr/local --with-apr=/usr/local. The versions are: apr-1.5.2 and apr-util-1.5.4. –xb. Oct 5 '
