The correct way of doing it is not to install virtualbox virtualbox-host-modules, instead of that, first I should check kernel version uname -r in my case I'm using 3.16.7.10-1-MANJARO so I have to do sudo pacman -S linux316-virtualbox-host-modules As time goes on, blogs get more and more popular, they get better ranked, leaving official documentation way behind and users like me get false information. Anyway, hopefully my answer helps future users. share|improve this answer answered May 9 '15 at 17:53 Lynob 78952037 add a comment| up vote 0 down vote These are the simplified steps: The firt step you should be super user. pacman -S linux-headers pacman -S virtualbox virtualbox-guest-iso modprobe vboxdrv …but if you do not want to do manually at each startup: open the file vim /etc/modules-load.d/virtualbox.conf add to the current file vboxdrv Add usernames to the vboxusers group gpasswd -a $USER vboxusers Troubleshooting[/b:8wk2jz3u] If you put the net

Please reinstall the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root. If it is available in your distribution, you should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. So I did the obvious, running the Vboxdrv setup. I ran this command: sudo service vboxdrv setup I got an error while doing so.: stopping kernel drivers...done. Uninstalling old virtualbox dkms kernel modules/etc/init.d/voboxdrv: 302: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv: /usr/share/virtualbox/src/vboxhost/do_dkms: not found ...done. (Failed, trying without DKMS) recompiling VirtualBox kernel modules...failed! (look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out what went wrong.) So, I took a look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to see if I can find anything. I got this error: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv: 334: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv: /usr/share/virtualbo

I'm trying to install Virtualbox on my Acer Chromebook R11 $ uname -r 3.18.0-12438-gfa5c4dd i cloned the source for 3.18 and followed the steps in the Build kernel headers and install Virtualbox wiki page. everything went successful, but the kernel and image files are named like this: linux-headers-3.18.0-12453-g22f7042-dirty_3.18.0-12453-g22f7042-dirty-10.00.Custom_amd64.deb linux-image-3.18.0-12453-g22f7042-dirty_3.18.0-12453-g22f7042-dirty-10.00.Custom_amd64.deb So, the version appendix is 12453 instead of 12438 I think this leads to the following error, when trying to install the virtualbox modules with modprobe: $ modprobe vboxdrv bash: modprobe: command not found (trusty)pitey@localhost:~/kernel$ sudo modprobe vboxdrv modprobe: ERROR: ../libkmod/libk
