Now, in this piece of code: hFile = CreateFile(filename, GENERIC_READ | GENERIC_WRITE, FILE_SHARE_DELETE, NULL, CREATE_ALWAYS, FILE_ATTRIBUTE_NORMAL, NULL); hFileMapping http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9096421/cannot-create-file-mapping-for-a-file-i-just-opened-get-path-not-found = CreateFileMapping(hFile, NULL, PAGE_READWRITE, 0, sizeInBlocks*SO_BLOCK_SIZE, filename); The file is created allright, but the value of hFileMapping is NULL! Which is weird because I'm using hFile (which is a valid handle!) and when I check GetLastError() status after the call to CreateFileMApping() I'm getting ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND, which is weird, because another function just used it to create the file. Any ideas? c winapi file-manipulation share|improve this question edited Feb 2 '12 at 12:54 Raymond Chen 35k65789 asked Feb 1 '12 at 13:16 MeLight 3,56012042 Are you sure that the error is from that functions? –asaelr Feb 1 '12 at 13:19 Yeap, when I'm checking it before that call I'm getting what's set there by CreateFile() - ERROR_ALREADY_EXISTS (which is ok, it overwrites it and sets the error code to that) –MeLight Feb 1 '12 at 13:20 1 The value of GetLastError() is meaningless if the function call succeeds. –Luke Feb 1 '12 at 14:55 Forgot to mention, hFileMapping is NULL. The reason you see that is because \\.\Device\HarddiskVolume2 is the path of the raw device. If you use that path, you no longer have access to the file system. What that path gives you is access to the raw disk sectors. If you must use \\.\Device\HarddiskVolume2 to identify the drive then you need to first convert, by some means or other, to a mapped drive letter, or a DOS device path for the volume. The latter would be, in your case, \\.\HarddiskVolume2 share|improve this answer edited Feb 1
