Setting the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable is for dynamic linking of shared objects (DLLs, that is the files ending with .so). Most compilers have an option -I to add include paths to search. And you probably want to use -L to tell the compiler where to find the library to link with, and use -l to tell the compiler to link with zlib. E.g. $ c++ -I$HOME/zlib/include some_file.cpp -L$HOME/zlib/lib -lz share|improve this answer edited Aug 9 '13 at 13:59 answered Aug 9 '13 at 13:44 Joachim Pileborg 211k15141249 add a comment| up vote 5 down vote You are missing zlib.h header file, on Linux install it via: sudo apt-get install libz-dev This w
build some project, you may see the compile error such as: "zlib.h : No such file or directory." Then you need to know which package include zlib.h to install by ‘apt-get'. I show you https://kobablog.wordpress.com/2011/05/17/how-to-find-and-install-the-missing-file-in-ubuntu/ how to find this. (Japanese version of this page) Using apt-file command At first, install apt-file command and prepare it. $ sudo apt-get install apt-file $ sudo apt-file update To find zlib.h, $ apt-file search zlib.h It reports too many result. Let's narrow down. $ apt-file search /usr/include/zlib.h zlib1g-dev: /usr/include/zlib.h OK. Now you know zlib.h is in zlib1g-dev package. $ sudo apt-get install zlib1g-dev Using ubuntu web service Later, My friend told me not found there is much easier way. Go to http://packages.ubuntu.com/ Use the form of ‘Search the contents of packages' Yes, it is easier. You don't need any preparation.
