And then I noticed afterwards that during the boot process, I would get this message:autochk* program not found - skipping AUTOCHECKThe message shows up after the windows logo and before the logon screen.I can still run windows just fine with no problems what-so-ever. The only issue with it, is that it's there. I just want to make the message go away. I can make it not show up by selecting "no GUI boot" in msconfig, but that only masks the issue. If I can fix it, I would like to do that. So, I searched for this issue on the forum here and found THIS. I followed the instructions there, but they didn't work.Is there anything else I can do?Thank you for the help!K.CampbellSystem Info:OS:

Mode, and booting into the Recovery Console with a Windows XP boot disk was no help either. So what was the solution? Well, after removing the drive and placing it in another computer, it appeared http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/443089/autochk-program-not-found-skipping-autocheck/ that the drive partition was accidentally hidden, most likely by the uninstall of Norton or the way in which the Norton GoBack utility was "protecting" the drive. Now the question became, how do you unhide the partition so the system will boot normally again. Luckily, PowerQuest (now owned by Symantec) has a small DOS utility that fixes the problem rather easily. The program is called PTEDIT. If you are http://www.pchell.com/support/autochknotfound.shtml experiencing a similar issue, follow the steps below to download the utility to a boot disk and unhide the partition. On a working computer, do the following: 1) Click the link below and save PTEDIT.ZIP to your desktop ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/tools/pq/utilities/ptedit.zip 2) Create a bootable MS-DOS disk for Windows In Windows XP Place a blank floppy disk in Drive A Open My Computer Right-click on Drive A (floppy drive) Click on Format Check the box for "Create an MS-DOS Startup Disk" Click Start Click OK to the warning about formattting the disk will erase all data Click Ok to Format Complete Close the Format Disk window For boot disks for other operating systems, you may want to visit Bootdisk.com 3) Copy PTEDIT to the floppy disk Double-click on the PTEDIT.ZIP file you downloaded to the desktop Right-click on PTEDIT.EXE and click on Copy Open My Computer Double-click on Drive A Click on Edit Click on Paste 4) Remove the disk from the floppy drive and place it in the floppy drive of the problem computer 5) Turn on the power to the problem computer and allow it to boot to from the floppy drive. Make sure the BIOS in your computer is set to boot from the floppy driv

December 2009 11:58 This is a reposting of a prior (and popular) blog entry that unfortunately was "chopped" when we migrated toour new platform. Here it is in full: Preface: this article refers to making direct edits to the Windows Registry. If you are not experienced with this subject, ask your company's IT Administrator or a computer-expert friend/neighbor for help. Our Tech Support group has seen a few reports of this error (Program not found - skipping AUTOCHECK) from customers when running Diskeeper's bootime defrag. The error starts early in the boot process while the Session Manager process (smss.exe) is busy getting the system up and running. Smss.exe is critical to loading the paging file, initializing the registry and loading kernel components. But, before it does any of that it looks to a registry key called BootExecute. At that location it launches any applications listed. Session Manager then looks to the Windows system32 folder for particular executables it has

It lasts for 15 seconds and you then see a brief BSOD followed by a restart. DaleHolden recently experienced this issue when using Ghost. I saw it about 15 months ago and I wasn't using Ghost. I saw it again today after a Ghost Copy Drive. It occurred when I tried to boot back into the source partition. Dale and I were using Win7. This boot error occurs in WinXP if you try to boot a hidden WinXP NTFS partition. If you try to boot a hidden Win7 NTFS partition it hangs on the four glowing squares. Dale and I have searched Google and there is no solution for this error in Win7. Well none that we found and we did try hard. Today I tried... Checking that the partition wasn't hidden. It wasn't. mountmgr.sys wasn't missing Sliding the partition didn't help Win7 repair didn't help Getting desperate, so I tried tbosdt and found Win7 didn't have a drive letter. I assigned C: and Win7 booted. In Win7 if you go into [MountedDevices] and rename \DosDevices\C: to \DosDevices\ you will get "autochk program not found - skipping autocheck" on the next boot. I think this is the cause of the error. An absent drive letter for the Win7 partition.
