When I try to access the handler by opening in a browser http://localhost/Priority1.Sync/Transfer.p1s, I get error 404 (404 0 in log file). Other pages in the web application work, e.g. http://localhost/priority1.sync/syncservice.asmx The handler works fine on my IIS7 dev machine. web.config is setup as follows:

It has been working flawlessly before though on this server. Now, all I get if I try to open the app homepage (http://some.intranet.server/XeroxCentreWareWeb/) is a "404 - File or directory not found" error. The app is configured to run in it's own app pool, which runs as Network Service. The Network Service account has read access to the configured directory. If I file or directory stop the app pool, I get the expected "Service Unavailable" message, meaning the app and its pool are wired correctly I tried to track down any file permission issues with procmon - nothing to be seen. There isn't even an access to the web app directory happening when the page loads. Interestingly, according to procmon, the web server accesses the 401-2 custom error file (Logon failed due to server configuration) first, but then decides to send the 404 down to the client. EDIT: The app runs with Windows-integrated authentication. Regular users have access to the app directory as well (I would have noticed file system "ACCESS DENIED" messages in procmon, if there had been any.) This makes me think that there is some kind of weird permission problem that occurs even before the application files are being accessed. I just have no idea where to look. I've tried to run the app pool as Local System for a test, but to no avail. What else could I check in this case? windows-server-2003 permissions iis-6 asp.net web-applications share|improve this question edited Oct 22 '09 at 14:10 asked Oct 22 '09 at 13:00 Tomalak 1,16341429 1 +1 for using ProcMon, btw. –user3914 Oct 22 '09 at 13:06 add a comment| 10 Answers 10 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote First off, I love the troubleshooting steps that you took. One more 'break' test is to stop the site itself, not just th
and browsed to one of the .aspx pages in the newly installed website. Every time that I did this I received a Page Not Found HTTP 404 error. When I browsed to a .htm or .html file, that file was appropriately displayed in the browser. The next thing I tried was opening Internet Explorer and manually entering the URL to the .aspx page. Still no luck, and yes the .htm and .html pages worked just fine. I found a web service that was installed on the server and tried to open the .asmx file only to get the 404 error again. After doing some research I finally figured out what it was. First I’ll explain the software installed on the server. The box is Windows 2003 Standard Edition with IIS6, MS SOAP Toolkit 2.0 SP2, MSXML 4.0 Parser and SDK, a whole slew of Windows Updates and the Windows Support Tools. Don’t ask why we have some of these things installed because I don’t know the answer. I only get the box with a preconfigured build on it. The fix. Open IIS, expand the server node and select the Web Services Extensions folder. In the Detail pane on the right hand side you will see a listing of the Web Service Extensions that are installed and their Status. In that list you should see ASP .NET v1.1.4322 (if you’re running the .NET 1.1 framework) and the Status for it will be set to Prohibited. Select the ASP .NET v1.1.4322 item from the list and click the Allow button immediately to it’s left. The Status will change from Prohibited to Allowed and you will now be able to browse to you .aspx and .asmx pages. I’m the Igloo Coder and I finally able to get back into the Igloo.
