I have a web site on IIS and can connect to it externally, however I get random 404 errors. I understand that you probably have to do somethingwith the handler mappings but dont have enough information to set it up myself. I sure could use some help https://forums.iis.net/t/next/1192766 on this. thanks Reply lprete 159 Posts MicrosoftModerator Re: IIS 7 error 404 Oct 23, 2012 03:04 PM|lprete|LINK Review the w3svc logs for the 404 sub-status code. Once you have the sub-status code find the related KB article which should provide a resolution. Review this KB for a list of HTTP 404 errors and their substatus codes. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943891 Lou Prete [MSFT] Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I created the sub folder c:\inetpub\wwwroot\com.ianquigley and created an HTML file index.html with the content "cake" The default document for the web site is index.html On the server, in Chrome I browse to http://new.ianquigley.com/index.html and get a 404 Error. with IIS web sites or application, the various logs can be very helpful. Lets look at all them. The IIS logs HTTPERR log Failed Request Trace The Windows event log Http.sys trace Realtime IIS logs Health Monitoring for ASP.NET Advanced Logging Extension The IIS logs by default these are per site per day under C:\inetpub\logs\LogFiles\WSVCx where x is the ID of the site. ls iis:\sites shows you all sites with their IDs. By default the logs are only accessible to elevated administrators. In many cases the most important information for troubleshooting is at the end of the row, if you keep the default fields, the two numbers after the last dash show the http status (such as 200 or 404) and next to it the substatus which shows an IIS-specific status and gives more details about the request. ...Gecko/20100101+Firefox/35.0 - 404 0 2 62 ...Gecko/20100101+Firefox/35.0 - 200 0 0 687 ...Gecko/20100101+Firefox/35.0 - 500 19 0 251 For a list of these substatus codes check this KB article There are actually some substatus codes that IIS uses that are not listed in that article: 401.503 - (IP address rejected) Unauthorized 403.503 - (IP address rejected) Forbidden 404.503 - (IP address rejected) NotFound 500.20 - Server error: URL authorization scope cannot be found. 500.21 - Internal Server Error Handler "ScriptHandlerFactory" has a bad module "ManagedPipelineHandler" in its module list 500.22 - An ASP.NET setting has been detected that does not apply in Integrated managed pipeline mode. 500.23 - An ASP.NET setting has been detected that does not apply in Integrated managed pipeline mode. These logs are written by the kernel-mode part of IIS http.sys, they are not written continuously but buffered for a while and then flushed to the files.
