I am using Windows XP at office and Windows Vista Home Basic at home. I am unable to configure the IIS. I have tried to install the IIS from windows features. It is all getting properly installed and then if https://discussions.apple.com/thread/455102?start=0&tstart=0 I type http://localhost/ it says page cannot be displayed and error is HTTP 404. At home, it is showing HTTP 404.4 error. I have IIS 5.1 at office and 7 at home... Please help me.. and this is a bit urgent. Any help will be appreciated... Thanks in Advance Reply usha.v 3 Posts Re: IIS localhost error Jun 29, 2007 04:24 AM|usha.v|LINK Hi, I was unable to view that website at office. Anyway, I am unable to open the Default IIS page(iisstart.asp) https://forums.iis.net/t/1127408.aspx?IIS+localhost+error in the IIS Server. My system is using a proxy server to connect to the Internet and even when I disable the proxy connection, http:\\localhost\ does not open and shows a 404 error. The pages, the files are all located in wwwroot folder. Are they any security permission constraints? I have Admin rights to this system. The HTML files and all other files work properly from the root directory, but vdir is not working (I created a Virtual Directory. It isdisplayed at IIS MMC). Local host and even the IP address doesn't respond. Kindly help. Please list out all the steps for viewing asp or html pages from Virtual directory. Thanks in advance. You say "http:\\localhost\ does not open and shows a 404 error" and then say "HTML files and all other files work properly from the root directory" - which is it? Those two statements conflict with each other. Did you mean to type http://localhost/ (forward slashes) ? Do you have a valid default document in the root? There are no special or extra steps to get a virtual directory to display pages if the root is already working. If I go to localhost, the default page is displayed, so the web server is ok. I have added a folder with a page in it in the \inetpub\wwwroot directory. The full path to the page is then C:\inetpub\wwwroot\folder\file.html. I have restarted the services but if I navigate to localhost/folder/file.html I get a 404 file not found error. Obviously I have forgotten something simple, but what is it? :) iis http-status-code-404 share|improve this question asked Apr 14 '14 at 10:44 user1301428 1,75042247 Check error log, you will find what exactly it is searching –Sai Apr 14 '14 at 11:56 @Sai It is searching that exact file: GET /folder/file.html - 80 –user1301428 Apr 14 '14 at 12:08 I think this is from access log, there will be error log, whenever it fails...! –Sai Apr 14 '14 at 12:10 @Sai Uhm, weird..
