Vmware Mount Hgfs
down vote favorite 3 I am running Ubuntu 64-bit on VMWare workstation 10. I want to access the files on my windows 8 PC (both on same PC). I have checked "always enabled" for folder sharing on VMWare and gave path to my drives (E,F,G and a folder on my PC). Installed VM tools, they're upto date. The first two worked fine for me. But for the third one - "Error: cannot mount filesystem: No such device"
Modprobe: Fatal: Module Vmhgfs Not Found.
is being displayed. I am not able to find the shared files in /mnt/hgfs. sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools sudo mkdir /mnt/hgfs sudo mount -t vmhgfs .host:/ /mnt/hgfs Should I enable any permission access for my drives. For the sharing properties of the drives on W8, I enabled "Share this folder" option. Even then I cannot see shared folders in my hgfs (ubuntu). I am a new bee to linux OS, so please help. Depending upon your configuration, the solution is either the fault of the OS or VMware Tools and the related drivers. This post defines a way to ascertain if the root cause is VMware Tools and if so, how to quickly and easily remedy the situation. Problem Background My production VMs have at least one VMware Shared Folder back to the host OS, so that I can access downloaded files in a normalized manner. As these links stopped working one day, started investigating a solution. What was clear though, in all cases each Shared Folder mount point displayed nothing when accessed. After extensively searching forums, blogs, and wikis for answers, I learned there is a complete lack of consistency in what they suggest. No clear-cut solution worked unanimously for commenters. Most suggestions assumed either:

The 'nofail' mount options tells mount to not report an error when the mount fails, so systemd will continue to boot. Then once booted you can deal with getting the shared folder to work again.A other alternative that many people use, is to just use nfs/cifs instead for sharing data between the guest and host. It tends to be more reliable.
