data The FMTERR|NOFMTERR system option determines whether an error message is generated when a variable's format cannot be found. Specifying NOFMTERR causes missing formats to be replaced with the w. or $w. format. Note that a numeric format can be replaced with the w. format, not the w.d format. If a numeric user-written format is associated with a variable and no decimal the format $mmddyy was not found or could not be loaded width is specified when the format is assigned, NOFMTERR uses the w. format. If a decimal width is specified when the format is assigned, NOFMTERR uses the w.d format. For example, if a user-written format ABC is associated with a variable using the following FORMAT statement, NOFMTERR uses 6.2 as the format: format var abc6.2; If the format is associated with the variable using the following FORMAT statement, NOFMTERR uses 6. as the format, and the decimal portion of the value is rounded: format var abc.; Operating System and Release InformationProduct FamilyProductSystemSAS ReleaseReportedFixed*SAS SystemBase SASMicrosoft Windows Server 2003 Datacenter 64-bit EditionMicrosoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise 64-bit EditionMicrosoft Windows XP 64-bit EditionMicrosoft® Windows® for x64OS/2Microsoft Windows 8 Enterprise 32-bitMicrosoft Windows 8 Enterprise x64Microsoft Windows 8 Pro 32-bitMicrosoft Windows 8 Pro x64z/OSZ64Microsoft® Windows® for 64-Bit Itanium-based SystemsMicrosoft Windows 8.1 Enterprise 32-bitMicrosoft Windows 8.1 Enterprise x64Microsoft Windows 8.1 ProMicrosoft Windows 8.1 Pro 32-bitMicrosoft Windows 95/98Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced ServerMicrosoft Windows 2000 Datacenter ServerMicrosoft Windows 2000 ServerMicrosoft Windows 2000 ProfessionalMicrosoft Windows NT WorkstationMicrosoft Windows Server 2003 Datacenter EditionMicrosoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise EditionMicrosoft Windows Server 2003 Standard EditionMicrosoft Windows

The following error can have several possible causes: ERROR: The format [NAME] was not found or could not be loaded. The most common cause of the error is that SAS does not know where to find the format listed in the error. Only three locations are http://support.sas.com/kb/23/083.html searched for format libraries: the WORK library, a library referenced by a libref of LIBRARY, and any library listed in the FMTSEARCH= system option. For a complete discussion of how SAS locates formats, please refer to Usage Note 23007: How can I permanently store and use formats that I have created?: (For the PC and Unix only) SAS might also be looking for the wrong format catalog because the engine for the libref that points to the format library might be incorrect. A SAS library can contain both Version 6 and Version 8 format catalogs, so make sure the engine for the libref is the correct engine. If you are unsure of the engine being used, the engine will be listed in the SAS Log under the LIBNAME statement. If you are running SAS Version 8 and issue a LIBNAME statement, the default engine will be V8. If the LIBNAME statement points to a library with only SAS Version 6 files, then the engine will be V6. Generally, an error occurs when the engine associated with the libref is either V7, V8, or V9, and the format catalog being
The format XXXX was not found or could not be loaded." This happens generally when you don't have the format library where the SAS dataset located. What happens here http://studysas.blogspot.com/2010/02/error-format-xxxx-was-not-found-or.html is, SAS will not permit you to open the data set without the format library. But, if you use options nofmterr; at the top of your program, SAS will opens the dataset for you despite the fact that it does not have the format library. SAS doesn't treat missing format or informat as an error when the options nofmterr; statement used. The FMTERR\NOFMTERR option determines whether or not SAS generates an error not found message when a variable's format cannot be found. (source: support.sas.com) The caveat here is, you will not be able to see the formatted values for your variables, but you will be able to open or use the dataset. OPTIONS nofmterr; *you will not be able to see the formatted values for your variables; If you want to see the formatted values for the variables, you need to use AUTOEXEC.sas program. Autoexec.sas program uses not found or fmtsearch option which will tell SAS to look for formats in the assigned Formats library. This works great if I want to first open SAS, and then open a dataset. AUTOEXEC.sas Program: ** Location of formats catalog **; specify location of formats folderinside the libname statement. libname frmtdir "C:\Documents and Settings\sreddy\Desktop\studyfolder";options fmtsearch=(WORK frmtdir library); When you submitabove code,SAS willsearch for formats first in the work library, then in the format directory (fmtdir) andthen in the default SAS library. Permanent formats can be accessed with LIBREF LIBRARY directly, while FMTSEARCH option needs to be specified with user-defined LIBREF.
