a dual boot system where I partitioned the HD: ~30 GB for Ubuntu 11.4 and ~47 GB for CentOS 6.5.
Pvcreate Device Not Found (or Ignored By Filtering) Ubuntu
I would like to make a separate logical partition for /tmp and /home on the CentOS side. However, when I enter.Code: Select allsudo vgsI getCode: Select allNo volume groups foundWhen I enterCode: Select https://access.redhat.com/solutions/33225 allsudo fdisk -l
I get the followingCode: Select allDisk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes

So I try to set up physical volumes with pvcreate and get the following results.Code: Select all$ sudo pvcreate /dev/sda1

When trying to make the first step of defining a PV on a specific block device, I get the following error message: [root@localhost /] pvcreate /dev/sdb Can't open /dev/sdb exclusively. Mounted filesystem? /dev/sdb is not mounted and its partition table was deleted. I should mention also that /dev/sdb used to represent a larger block device (about 4 times larger) not found (or and was reduced by configuration of hardware raid (I split the hd to 4 in the raid controller). Has anyone ever encountered this error before and knows how to take it from here? lvm share|improve this question edited Aug 20 '14 at 5:27 iDev 4,347122644 asked Jun 4 '12 at 22:45 user1436155 26113 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 14 down vote Maybe device-mapper is 'stealing' this device. Try this: [root@host ~]# dmsetup ls sdb (253, 2) VolGroup00-LogVol01 (253, 1) VolGroup00-LogVol00 (253, 0) If you find sdb device listed as above example, remove it using dmsetup and create the physical volume: [root@host ~]# dmsetup remove sdb [root@host ~]# pvcreate /dev/sdb Physical volume "/dev/sdb" successfully created share|improve this answer answered Jul 13 '12 at 19:24 viniciusfs 1415 I had to use dmsetup remove_all -f to unlock my situation –asoundmove Mar 7 at 22:33 add a comment| up vote 0 down vote [root@localhost /] pvcreate -vvvvv /dev/sdb Could ouput more details. and you could use lsof -L to check if the block device is opened by other process. share|improve this answer edited Aug 20 '14 at 5:26 iDev 4,347122644 answered Aug 20 '14 at 4:55 dongmao 1 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved
