Hocking » Blog, and kindly contributed to R-bloggers) Recently whiling trying to build an R package for generalized estimating equation model selection (QICpack on github), I was getting an error related to latex creating the PDF package manuals. It seems like this is a relatively common problem on some versions of Mac OS X, but I did not find it easy to find an answer so I thought I'd describe my ultimate solution. The specific error I was getting was: error in texi2dvi(file = file, pdf = true, clean = clean, quiet = quiet, : pdflatex is not available I was getting this error regardless of whether building the package using R CMD pack
TRUE, texi2dvi = getOption("texi2dvi"), texinputs = NULL, index = TRUE) texi2pdf(file, clean = FALSE, quiet = TRUE, texi2dvi = getOption("texi2dvi"), texinputs = NULL, index = TRUE)
Pdflatex Is Not Available Windows
Arguments file character string. Name of the LaTeX source file. pdf logical.
Install Pdflatex Windows
If TRUE, a PDF file is produced instead of the default dvi file (texi2dvi command line option --pdf). pandoc.exe: pdflatex not found. pdflatex is needed for pdf output. clean logical. If TRUE, all auxiliary files created during the conversion are removed. quiet logical. No output unless an error occurs. texi2dvi character string (or NULL). Script or program https://www.r-bloggers.com/building-r-packages-missing-path-to-pdflatex/ used to compile a TeX file to dvi or PDF. The default (selected by "" or "texi2dvi" or NULL) is to look for a program or script named ‘texi2dvi’ on the path and otherwise emulate the script with system2 calls (which can be selected by the value "emulation"). See also ‘Details’. texinputs NULL or a character vector of paths to https://stat.ethz.ch/R-manual/R-devel/library/tools/html/texi2dvi.html add to the LaTeX and bibtex input search paths. index logical: should indices be prepared? Details texi2pdf is a wrapper for the common case of texi2dvi(pdf = TRUE). Despite the name, this is used in R to compile LaTeX files, specifically those generated from vignettes and by the Rd2pdf script (used for package reference manuals). It ensures that the ‘R_HOME/share/texmf’ directory is in the TEXINPUTS path, so R style files such as ‘Sweave’ and ‘Rd’ will be found. The TeX search path used is first the existing TEXINPUTS setting (or the current directory if unset), then elements of argument texinputs, then ‘R_HOME/share/texmf’ and finally the default path. Analogous changes are made to BIBINPUTS and BSTINPUTS settings. The default option for texi2dvi is set from environment variable R_TEXI2DVICMD, and the default for that is set from environment variable TEXI2DVI or if that is unset, from a value chosen when R is configured. A shell script texi2dvi is part of GNU's texinfo. Several issues have been seen with released versions, so if yours does not work correctly try R_TEXI2

You will be better served asking this on R-help. Best, Jim pdflatex not found > > It seems the function texi2dvi isn't working for me. When I click the 'Compile PDF' button on the standard 'example-1' file from the Sweave manual by Friedrich Leisch, I get the following output, including error: compilePdf("~/Desktop/Typesetting/SweaveExample/example-1.Snw") Writing to file example-1.tex Processing code chunks ... 1 : echo term verbatim 2 : term verbatim eps pdf You can now run LaTeX on 'example-1.tex' Running texi2dvi...Error in tools:::texi2dvi(file = fileName, pdf = TRUE, clean = TRUE) : Running 'texi2dvi' on 'example-1.tex' failed. Messages: /usr/bin/texi2dvi: pdflatex exited with bad status, quitting. /usr/bin/texi2dvi: see example-1.log for errors. I looked for the example-1.log file that is referenced but can not find it using Spotlight. I also checked some of the things that I saw you had suggested other users try, but it appears that R can see my TeX installation, as shown below: file.exists(Sys.which('texi2dvi')) [1] TRUE .rs.is_tex_installed() [1] TRUE attr(,"class") [1] "rs.scalar" Any thoughts or suggestions for me? Date Votes 2 comments 0 Perhaps can you try calling texi2dvi on the .tex file from R running in the terminal. For example, cd to that directory and then run: texi2dvi(file="example-1.tex", pdf=TRUE, clean=TRUE) Let me know if that works and we can then dig deeper, Josh Ian Pylvainen December 30, 2013 14:52 0 votes Share Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google+ Permalink 0 Closing the discussion due to inactivity.
