When you detach the database, permission are kept only for account who detached it. Right Click on File > Properties > Security Tab. Make sure permission are proper. I performed the following actions: use master; backup database msdb to disk='C:\sqlserver\test.bak'; go restore database msdbtest from disk='c:\sqlserver\test.bak' with move 'MSDBData' to 'C:\SQLServer\Data\msdbtest_data.mdf' , move 'MSDBLog' TO 'C:\SQLServer\Logs\msdbtest_log.ldf'; go I then stopped the SQL Server Service, made a copy of C:\SQLServer\Data\msdbtest_data.mdf and C:\SQLServer\Logs\msdbtest_log.mdf, and restarted SQL Server. If you want to attach the database using SQL Server Management Studio, the account running SSMS must have full control on both the database MDF and LDF files To grant privileges to files: Right click the file in Windows Explorer Open the Security tab Click Edit Click Add and add the SSMS account Grant Full control Go to SSMS and try to attach the file again You can copy the file to another folder, to avoid C root, you might not have enough permissions there share|improve this answer answered Oct 14 '13 at 21:55 Milena Petrovic 62136 Worked for me tooooo.
