if Remote Desktop Connection Client version 6.0.6001 or 6.0.6002 is used with the highest RDP Compression setting. Windows Server 2008 SP1/SP2 defaults to a lower RDP Compression setting, and thus will only exhibit the above symptoms if the setting has been changed to "Optimized to use less network bandwidth", which is the maximum. Windows Server 2008 R2 defaults to the maximum RDP Compression setting. WORKAROUND Change the RDP Compression setting on the server to "Balances memory and network bandwidth" (recommended) or "Optimized to use less memory" using Group Policy. If using Windows Server 2008 R2 you may also choose "Do not use an RDP compression algorithm". An alternative workaround is to use a different Remote Desktop Connection Client version than those mentioned above, however, this may not be practical. Below are instructions for making the change to the local group policy; if preferred you can use a

All of sudden starting a few weeks ago, ALL the users from another city (who uses remote desktop) is complaining https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/28288543/Remote-Desktop-Error-Because-of-a-protocol-error-this-session-will-be-disconnected.html that they are kicked off the session once or twice a day with the message "Because of a protocol error, this session will be disconnected". I googled this message and found numerous solutions to try, so I decided to post the question because I can't possibly try/apply all of those remedies. I am wondering if un-checking check boxes for "Visual styles" and "Persistent bipmap caching" will resolve the problem ... but then no user has changed the settings in remote desktop or know how to make these kind of changes. So that leaves one possibility - something happened to my terminal server settings. One thing that I did a few weeks ago was to set up another Virtual Machine (on VMWare box) to run Norton End Point Protection Management Center. Perhaps this new virtual machine took away some of the resources from TS virtual machine? Maybe not likely ... but I am just thinking out loud. In the office where we host Terminal Serve, our internet connection is cable internet with 50 mbps down /5 mbps up which is pretty good. Problem: i had remote desktop up and running on a PC and then i got this: "because http://computerboom.blogspot.com/2008/08/solution-because-of-protocol-error-this.html of a protocol error detected at the client (code 0x1104), this session will be disconnected. please try connecting to the remote computer again" pls help! Solution: The most common reason why this is happening is because you are using a custom VISUAL STYLE with your computer. Set the visual style back to LUNA on protocol error XP or CLASSIC and see if the error occurs again. Most likely it will not. Not all visual styles produce this error, but if you want a custom visual style on the remote computer then you will have to find a compatible visual style that works with RDP via trial and error. Another solution would because of a be to set the RDP client to NOT use the visual styles by unchecking the box that says THEMES (see pic below): Posted by computerboom at 9:12 AM 43 comments: kenmFebruary 4, 2009 at 2:43 AMMany Thanks."the box that says THEMES"fixed the problem for me.ReplyDeleteAnonymousSeptember 7, 2009 at 8:00 PMthnks! mate...... it works... seems like the advanced theme on remote computer was the problem....and unchecking the theme N bitmap option made it workReplyDeleteAnonymousSeptember 8, 2009 at 5:38 AMThanks for the lead. As an update, I'm using Windows 7, and connecting back to an XP machine. The themes work, but it was the "Persistent bitmap caching" that was causing my issue.ReplyDeleteAnonymousOctober 6, 2009 at 10:05 AMExcelente!! Después de probar y probar, realicé la conexión con la opción Themes deshabilitada y adios problema.Muchas gracias!!ReplyDeleteAnonymousOctober 8, 2009 at 2:51 PMThanks for the solution. Unchecking the "Themes" in the "Experience" tab worked for me.ReplyDeleteAnonymousNovember 19, 2009 at 2:16 PMFinally a solution that actually works without registry edit
