MIXTURE WHAT'S TRUE: A 1970-s proof quarter struck on the back of a 1941 Canadian coin was listed on eBay for $35,000. WHAT'S FALSE: The coin did not enter circulation. Example: [Collected via e-mail, June 2016] I read that old 1970 quarters are worth http://www.snopes.com/1970-quarter-ebay-canada/ thousands now because they have a small 1941 number above the wordLiberty on the back. Supposedly it's from Canadian quarters that were reused as American ones. Origin:An article published onWoman's World on 31 May 2016 described arare U.S. quarter from 1970 that was purportedly minted by accident on the back of a Canadian coin: We all have loose change sitting around, despite our promises to ourselves to roll 'em and bring 'em to the bank--or at least deposit them in one of those sorting machines. And while it's no surprise that many 200-year-old coins are worth more than the standard value, some 1970 quarters could be worth far more than 25 cents. How much more? How about a yearly salary's worth! The article quoted above is basedonan eBay listing for a "1970-S Proof Washington Quarter Struck on 1941 Canada Quarter NGC PF 65." The coin is currently listed by Mike Byers, Inc. for USD$35,000: The chances of finding one of thesecoins are practically nonexistent, as they are"proof coins," and werethereforenever intended for circulation: Regular coins are struck just once under normal pressure and at a high rate of speed, but each Proof coin is carefully struck at least twice under high pressure to bring out the full details of the design. The background of a Proof coin is usually mirror-like. According to the eBay list
a "p" mint and it appears it has a minting error. On the eagle side the left wing appears to have a bubble in it and on Washington's head/ear area appears to have a "bubble" effect in it as well. Also http://en.allexperts.com/q/Coin-Collecting-2297/2010/6/1990-washington-quarter.htm this coin appears to have a weird sound when dropped. Is this rare for a 1990 coin/does it have any value?? AnswerHi Matthew: Thanks for your question. My initial response is that it is manmade, http://coinscurrency.com/quarters/sheets/8-10-2011/sheet1.htm and not rare. It is difficult to answer your question without a photo of the other side of your coin or seeing the coin, but I'll try. If you want to ask a follow-up quarter error question by providing another photo of the coin, or more of a description, I'll modify the answer, if required. It could be altered or real. Let's look at the possibilities. Your coin may not be a real mint error. I'm guessing by the fact that you say it sounds unusual when dropped, along with the "bubble" effect, leads me to an altered coin. Your coin was likely in a fire, 1990 us quarter or had heat applied to it. Is the surface dark where the "bubble" is? The clad coinage has the planchet material explosive bonded together into a sandwich type appearance, with the copper-nickel outer layers bonded to the pure copper center part. By applying heat, the clad layer can separate internally from the copper core and form a "bubble" in the area where the heat was applied. If real, and the bonding de-laminated after it was struck, it have an approximate value of around $10 to $25, depending on condition, to an interested collector. I've provided two links for you to see what type of other non-error coins exist. See link: http://coinauctionshelp.com/page15.html See link: http://conecaonline.org/content/OhNo.htm You may want to check ebay listings under US coins in the error category to see if your error is listed and what they are going for. You may also want to check out these links on error coin values: http://www.coinsite.com/html/USErrorPrices.asp http://www.minterrornews.com/priceguide.html If you live close to a local shop, they should offer an opinion as to it's value and if it is authentic at no charge. Always try and get at least two opinions and try and deal with PNG dealers if possible. Here's a link to find one in your area: http://www.pngdealer
