identified by the URL resource. Useful to obtain metainformation about the entity implied by the request without transferring the entity-body itself. Often used to test hypertext links for validity, accessibility, and recent modification. POST: Submit data to the Web server such as 1) post a message to a bulletin board, newsgroup or mailing list, 2) provide input data - typically from a CGI form - to a data-handling test-migrationserveravailability process, 3) add a record directly to a database. PUT: Set (place/replace) the data for a particular URL to the new data submitted by the client. For example, upload a new Web page to a server. DELETE: Remove the data associated with the URL resource. For example, delete a Web page. TRACE: Run a remote, application-layer loop-back of the request message. Effectively a 'ping' which tests what data the Web server is receiving from the client. CONNECT: Reserved for use with tunneling (e.g. SSL) via a proxy server. This method is defined only for HTTP version 1.1, not the earlier version 1.0. If the method in the request HTTP data stream is not one of the above, then a 501 error will result. Or the method may be valid but not actually supported by the Web server. This typically only happens for newer methods such as CONNECT when received by older Web servers. (Last updated: March 2012). Fixing 501 errors - general This error should be very rare in any Web browser. It is more likely if the client is not a Web browser - particularly if the Web server is old. Recently, I came across a case where Mac’s built-in Mail client would not connect to Exchange through KEMP load balancer that was configured to user Layer 7 load balancing on KEMP LoadMaster. The Exchange environment was mixed Exchange the http request was forbidden with client authentication scheme 'negotiate' 2013 and Exchange 2016 but load balancer was configured to use only Exchange 2016 servers.

KEMP LoadMaster was configured to terminate SSL connection on the load balancer and the connection to the Exchange servers was encrypted as well. Microsoft

Outlook 2013/2016 clients on PC did not exhibit any issues. Latest Microsoft Outlook for Mac did not exhibit any issues either! It is worth pointing out that while Outlook 2013/2016 on PC use MAPI/HTTP or RPC/HTTP to connect to http://www.checkupdown.com/status/E501.html Exchange 2013/2016 servers, both clients on Mac (Mac‘s own Mail client and Microsoft Outlook for Mac) use EWS to connect. Mac Mail would show “Account Error” which read “Unable to connect … The server returned error: Connections to host mail.contoso.com on default ports failed.” The error is somewhat misleading as when you look at EWS logs on Exchange server, you see that the server rejected the request with HTTP error 400 which translated to “bad request”. What I http://www.msexchange.org/blogs/bhargavs/exchange-server/mac-mail-not-connecting-to-exchange-server-part-1.html didn’t know at that point is which element in the HTTP request was causing the server to reject the request. Microsoft provides great testing tools for Exchange on www.exrca.com, so I decided to run EWS connectivity test from the toolset. To my surprise, the test failed with the error “Message: The request failed. The remote server returned an error: (501) Not Implemented.” I knew about this particular error as I had worked with Michael Van Horenbeeck and is documented here: You get an error “the connection to the server Mentions12 Products Neal (Exclaimer) Sales & Marketing Manager GROUP SPONSORED BY EXCLAIMER See more RELATED PROJECTS Email Encryption I deployed a ZixGateway appliance to provide https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/122372-owa-2003-returns-501-not-implemented-only-with-ssl all users in the organization with email encryption. I have four that I have setup identically. I've done the following: - Installed 2003 Standard - Patched - Installed Exchange 2003 - Patched - server error 501 Installed SP2 for Exchange 2003 - Patched - Created SSL Certificate via GoDaddy For three servers, all is well. For one server, I get a 501 - Not implemented error. However, I only get this error when using SSL. Regular HTTP access works great. Same results from external, internal, and on the server itself, so it's not firewall related. I've also already done the KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883380
