version 5.10 of CentOS as a web development server, and i am having trouble getting VNC-SERVER to work. This is a connecting to port 5900...failed: connection timed out great little installation and does everything i need but i would like to use the VNC viewer for remote administration. I've followed several post for installing VNC-SERVER, but i need help. I've included the https://support.realvnc.com/knowledgebase/article/View/241/1/timed-out-waiting-for-a-response-from-the-host-computer connection log for the user i am trying to connect with. I setup this Server using the Gnome GUI, so i can log into the console using a GUI. I am a Windows Server user mostly, but know enough Linux to be productive, i found using the Gnome GUI faster for my needs. This CentOS server is on my local network and not available to the outside. This is http://www.centos.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=46369 what my xstartup script looks like for this user:#!/bin/sh# Added the following line to ensure xterm is always available# Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:unset SESSION_MANAGERexec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresourcesxsetroot -solid greyvncconfig -iconic &xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &gnome-session &I've only setup one user with port 5901. When i try to debug the connection using a browser with the servers this IP address string: http://NNN.NNN.NNN.NNN:5801, it times out. This is the string i am using within the VNC viewer: NNN.NNN.NNN.NNN:1, i've also tried NNN.NNN.NNN.NNN:5901Here are the LISTENING ports: netstat -tulp |grep vnctcp 0 0 *:5801 *:* LISTEN 3136/Xvnc tcp 0 0 *:5901 *:* LISTEN 3136/Xvnc tcp 0 0 *:6001 *:* LISTEN 3136/Xvnc tcp 0 0 *:6001 *:* LISTEN 3136/XvncCan someone tell me what i am missing?thanks Attachments vnc-centos-log.txt (2.31 KiB) Downloaded 28 times Top TrevorH Forum Moderator Posts: 16715 Joined: 2009/09/24 10:40:56 Location: Brighton, UK Re: vnc viewer Connection timed out (10060), VNC-SERVER Quote Postby TrevorH » 2014/05/21 20:28:30 Did you read and follow http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/VNC-Server Full time Geek, part time moderator. Do you have network connection at all? Can you ping the CentOS? Do you have a firewall? Does the VNC service connection timed out up and running? You can try do some more extesive checks using NMap - nmap.org –EliadTech Nov 13 '12 at 12:46 I can connect to my server using putty. I checked vnsserver status using "service vncserver status" command and it is running. –Beginner Nov 13 '12 at 12:49 1 So, you should check out the firewall (if there's any), and test the VNC port with NMap. –EliadTech Nov 13 '12 at 13:06 Thanks. I disabled ip tables. It's now working. But I should learn how to add exception to firewall. –Beginner Nov 13 '12 at 13:14 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote Here how to add a firewall exception (you'll need to open ports 5900 and 5800). Solved: Unable to connect using RealVNC Discussion in 'All Other Software' started by SigVicious, Jul 10, 2008. Thread Status: Not open for further replies. Advertisement SigVicious Thread Starter Joined: May 1, 2007 Messages: 95 I use Real VNC on my workstations at work. Most of them I have no problem with. However, I have two that won't allow me to connect. I get the error "Unable to connect to host: Connection timed out (10060)" I've uninstalled and reinstalled RealVNC, reset the password, still no luck. As I mentioned, I have it running on all my other machines with no issues. Any help is appreciated. SigVicious, Jul 12, 2008 #3 CAPSLOCK Joined: Apr 24, 2004 Messages: 323 I would not recommend turning the firewall off. Instead run this from the cmd prompt: rem VNC netsh firewall add portopening TCP 5800 VNC-5800 ENABLE ALL netsh firewall add protopening TCP 5900 VNC-5900 ENABLE ALL rem RDP netsh firewall add portopening TCP 3389 "remote Desktop" Make sure to update to the latest version of VNC. There are many backdoors in the older versions. I got burnt by one of my clients one time. He watched as someone was entering credit card numbers in IE. CAPSLOCK, Jul 12, 2008 #4 SigVicious Thread Starter Joined: May 1, 2007 Messages: 95 Thanks for the input. It would only be the local / Windows firewall that I would turn off. I'm running a Cisco ASA on my administrative network. SigVicious, Jul 12, 2008 #5 SigVicious Thread Starter Joined: May 1, 2007 Messages: 95 Problem solved. It was the Windows firewall.
