the error: Error: too many hops (in reply to end of DATA command)
I tracked down the error to the postfix mydestination config (/etc/postfix/main.cf). For some reason the line had been commented out and replaced with mydestination = localhost #mydestination = mymailserver.com, localhost.com, , localhost mydestination = localhost I fixed it by changing it to: mydestination =

$myhostname, localhost.$mydomain, localhost I have no idea if/why it changed and I only just started getting reports of the undeliverable mail from a user today. Maybe this will help someone else. Mail-in-a-Box member JoshData commented Feb 15, 2016 The original is correct. There must be something else on your system that is different/incorrect. pryley commented Feb 15, 2016 Ok well since you said it was correct, I've changed the postfix setting back to mydestination = localhost. So the original problem was this: This is the mail system at host spam.flamble.it. I'm sorry to have to inform you that your message could not be delivered to one or more recipients. a time trying to get inbound mail to work from my new Spam filtering provider. The too many hops sip problem I see is that when my mail server gets the mail from Spam Soap there is something in the header that it thinks made too https://github.com/mail-in-a-box/mailinabox/issues/713 many hops. This mail server receives fine, but as soon as it comes from Spam Soap it never gets delivered and it seems to try and deliver over and over and over till it just stops and then I get a NDR. So here are some logs and NDR I have. I http://postfix.1071664.n5.nabble.com/Postfix-5-4-0-Error-too-many-hops-td51788.html have included my config file for postfix as well. This is my mail log in real-time as a test message comes in, you will see it just repeats everything over and over: Oct 22 20:30:01 abda dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected (no auth attempts): rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured Oct 22 20:30:01 abda dovecot: pop3-login: Disconnected (no auth attempts): rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured Oct 22 20:30:01 abda postfix/smtpd[10964]: connect from localhost.localdomain[127.0.0.1] Oct 22 20:30:01 abda postfix/smtpd[10964]: lost connection after CONNECT from localhost.localdomain[127.0.0.1] Oct 22 20:30:01 abda postfix/smtpd[10964]: disconnect from localhost.localdomain[127.0.0.1] Oct 22 20:30:20 abda postfix/smtpd[10964]: connect from mxl144v245.mxlogic.net[208.65.144.245] Oct 22 20:30:20 abda postfix/smtpd[10964]: CB677C0B64: client=mxl144v245.mxlogic.net[208.65.144.245] Oct 22 20:30:20 abda postfix/cleanup[10991]: CB677C0B64: message-id=

Specifically: Code: 554 5.4.0 Error: too many hops (in reply to end of DATA command) Our setup: We use Gmail as our external mail handler. Mail goes to Google, if Google doesn't have that address (person@example.org), it then goes to Mailarmory (which is an external spam filtering service), then it goes to our local mailserver (hostname "Blackhole") that holds a ton of aliases which point any person@example.org not on Google to the appropriate place (i.e. person@harvard.edu). We're trying to get rid of Mailarmory and let our local mailserver do the filtering. I installed and configured Amavis and all its friends according to this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PostfixAmavisNew Watching the mail.log, mail is coming in and out of the local mail server (Blackhole). Spam is being tagged appropriately, although the filter seems a bit lax at the moment. My biggest problem is the amount of "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender" messages I'm getting that have the "too many hops" error. Mailarmory is still in place at the moment because this is a production environment and we've only deleted a few of the whitelisted addresses at Mailarmory as a test. My only theory at the moment is that there is a loop created between the local mail server Blackhole and Mailarmory, but I'm not sure why exactly. I've att
