RewriteCond %{REQUEST_METHOD} ^TRACE RewriteRule .* - [F] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(.*)dev\.example\.edu$ [NC] RewriteRule ^/test(.*)$ http://dev.example.edu/test/index.php/test$1 [NC] on an apache 2.2 server, to get this rewrite working to hide the "index.php/test" part of the path. everything i've tried either loops the url part (index.php/test) within the address bar or gives a "too many redirects" error. i suspect that the "test" part of the equation being on both sides is throwing it off too many redirects error chrome but am not sure how to get it to work. i just want: dev.example.edu/test/index.php/test* to rewrite to: dev.example.edu/test/* thanks mod-rewrite rewrite share|improve this question edited Nov 30 '09 at 23:13 asked Nov 30 '09 at 23:04 chris 613 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote You need to exclude the destination path to avoid an infinite recursion: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(.*)dev\.example\.com$ [NC] RewriteCond $1 !^/index\.php/test/ RewriteRule ^/test/(.*)$ http://dev.example.com/test/index.php/test/$1 [NC] Here the match of the first grouping ($1) is checked not to match ^/index\.php/test/. But if you want to rewrite /test/index.php/test/… to /test/…, you will rather need this rule: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(.*)dev\.example\.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^/index\.php/test/(.*)$ http://dev.example.com/test/$1 [NC] share|improve this answer answered Nov 30 '09 at 23:41 Gumbo 393k63541666 i'm a little confused by this. in your second example, isn't the pattern switched with the match? i see it as: RewriteRule Substitution(switchThis) Pattern(withthis), when i expect the opposite –chris Dec 1 '09 at 0:06 @chris: You’re absolutely right. The syntax is of course RewriteRule pattern substutution. But you would say “I want pattern to be rewritten to substitution” and not vice versa. Because that’s how mod_rewrite works. –Gumbo Dec 1 '09 at 7:54 add a comment| up vote 0 down vote Per Ji

These were endless loops on pages that were already on HTTPS. I actually just got it figured out for my case, I use Perl and the $ENV variables changes with this last update. $ENV{HTTPS} is no longer a value on my server, I did find the new $ENV{HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTO} value which should be set to 'https' so I am verifying my scripts that way now. I originally thought this was something to do with mod_rewrite. Took a long time to track it down. Thanks again for your help! When the other three lines are included and we navigate to "http://localhost/posts/1/first-post-title", Safari is giving an error of: Too many redirects occurred trying to too many redirects open “http://localhost/posts/1/first-post-title”. This might occur if you open a page that is redirected to open another page which then is redirected to open the original page. apache mod-rewrite share|improve this question asked May 7 '11 at 11:45 purinkle migrated from serverfault.com May 7 '11 at 11:59 This question came from our site for system and network administrators. External redirects should nearly always be root-relative or absolute or specify an appropriate RewriteBase. (This would be a second problem after the redirect loop was resolved.) –w3dk Oct 31 '15 at 1:47 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote Your second line (first RewriteCond rule) is causing a perpetual match. The URL you redirect people to is matching and being redirected again. Drop that rule entirely and you should be good to go. share|improve this answer answered May 7 '11 at 13:03 Caleb 19438 It's not simply the first RewriteCond that "is causing a perpetual match". The whole second rule (2 conditions and a rewrite) would seem to be flawed. –w3dk Oct 31 '15 at 1:44 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using
