Instead of your booting the M$ dashboard or Hacked Dashboard (Evox, UnleashX, Avalaunch, etc.), there will be an message on the screen that says, "Your Xbox Requires Service" and you will see a number on the upper left hand corner of the screen Beware, you wont see the bootldr error's because (thanks to: Lordvader129) : "when you see this" is not entirely original xbox error accurate, you never see the bootloader errors, as they are one that cause the reboot/FRAGs2 - bootldr - Eeprom check failedWhen you see this error most of the times you have flashed something wrong. Or you dropped solder on your eeprom chips.4 - bootldr - Ram check failedYour Xbox ram chips are wasted.Maybe you dropped a little solder on it (try to remove it CAREFULLY!). Note, if they are fried, removing solder won't fix them). Maybe you were static when you touched the ram chips. They are kind off sensitive. If they are, they are fried, sell your xbox for spare parts.5 - kernel - HDD not locked (The retail xbox bioses require the hd to be locked)When you upgrade your hard disk drive for one that is larger, you most of the times use a new hard drive that you bought in the shop. Now, when you put this hdd in your xbox and you try to boot up with your chip off. It gives you error 5. Why you ask? Well i will try to explain it simple. The original (also called "Retail") hard drive is locked by MS. Why did they lock the harddrive?Well if it wasn't it wouldve been more than easy (in the start of xbox hacking)for hackers to change content on it. Thats why MS locks it. It is just a security measur
but now that I've managed, it'd be a shame to let all that information go to waste. So let us begin. Xbox soft modding is basically a method which allows your original Xbox to run 3rd party software like Xbox media Centre without having to physically mod your Xbox using a mod chip. It works by using specially crafted game save files which you load onto a memory unit. Loading these special save files in 1 of 3 Xbox titles bypasses the Xbox's security and installs alternate software onto the HDD. I won't go over the details here but there are literally hundreds of tutorials online and they all accomplish the same thing. My particular favourite is this tutorial from Lifehacker. Once the alternate software is loaded on the HDD, it hijacks the official Xbox dashboard when you power up and presents you with an alternate dashboard that lets you do pretty much anything you want. The most useful thing being to set up an FTP server which then allows you to access the file system, backup game saves, install new software like emulators or media players. The possibilities are effectively limitless and there are a multitude of tutorials available online if you search for them. It's important to note that soft modding doesn't modify your Xbox's BIOS or EEPROM in any way and hence ALL soft modded Xboxes can be restored to factory condition. No matter what you do to your soft modded Xbox, you can ALWAYS restore it to factory condition using the hot swap method, and that is what I'm going to cover in the next few paragraphs. The number one issue preventing you from simply plugging the Xbox HDD straight into your computer is that the original Xbox's HDD uses a lesser known capability of the IDE specification known as locking. The HDD cannot be read or written to unless the BIOS sends the required unlock code to the interface. While it's possible to find the unlock code and mod your computer's BIOS to unlock the drive on startup, it's far easier to let the Xbox perform the unlock for you then switch IDE cables to allow your computer to access the drive. Hot swapping then refers to the process of connecting the Xbox's HDD to your computer while the Xbox is still powered up. So to do this, you obviously need to take apart the casing on the Xbox to gain access to the IDE cables. There are 6 screws in total that hold the Xbox together. Each screw is a Torx 20 screw so ideally you'll need a size 20 Torx screwdriver to dismantle it. However I find it just as easy to use a flat blade screw driver of just the right width to fit snugly in the screw head between 2 opposite star points. Experiment and find what works best. 4 of the screws are hidden under the
