Handling error codes and exceptions by the web.xml In your web.xml you can configure error-page elements that act upon some error-code or exception-type. Typically, you might configure at the end of your web.xml the following:
ContentHandling JSP Page Errors Any number https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19316-01/819-3669/bnahi/index.html of exceptions can arise when a JSP page is https://docs.oracle.com/cd/A87860_01/doc/java.817/a83726/basics6.htm executed. To specify that the web container should forward control to an error page if an exception occurs, include the following page directive at the beginning of your JSP page: <%@ page errorPage="file-name" %> The Duke’s Bookstore 404 error application page tut-install/javaeetutorial5/examples/web/bookstore2/web/template/preludeErrorPage.jspf contains the directive: <%@ page errorPage="errorpage.jsp"%> The following page directive at the beginning of tut-install/javaeetutorial5/examples/web/bookstore2/web/error/errorpage.jsp indicates that it is serving as an error page: <%@ page isErrorPage="true" %> This directive makes an object of type javax.servlet.jsp.ErrorData available to the error page so that error page jsp you can retrieve, interpret, and possibly display information about the cause of the exception in the error page. You access the error data object in an EL (see Unified Expression Language) expression by way of the page context. Thus, ${pageContext.errorData.statusCode} retrieves the status code, and ${pageContext.errorData.throwable} retrieves the exception. You can retrieve the cause of the exception using this expression: ${pageContext.errorData.throwable.cause} For example, the error page for Duke’s Bookstore is as follows: <%@ page isErrorPage="true" %> <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" prefix="c" %> <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/fmt" prefix="fmt" %>
: ${pageContext.errorData.throwable.cause} Note – You can also define error pages for the WAR that contains a JSP page. If error pages are defined for both the WAR and a JSP page, the JSP page’s error page
either inside the page or outside the page (such as in a called JavaBean). This section describes the JSP error processing mechanism and provides a simple example. Using JSP Error Pages Any runtime error encountered during execution of a JSP page is handled using the standard Java exception mechanism in one of two ways: You can catch and handle exceptions in a Java scriptlet within the JSP page itself, using standard Java exception-handling code. Exceptions you do not catch in the JSP page will result in forwarding of the request and uncaught exception to an error page. This is the preferred way to handle JSP errors. You can specify the URL of an error page by setting the errorPage parameter in a page directive in the originating JSP page. (For an overview of JSP directives, including the page directive, see "Directives". ) In a servlet 2.2 environment, you can also specify a default error page in the web.xml deployment descriptor with instructions such as the following:
