If it isn't, that is a clue to the error. –JB King Aug 9 '13 at 20:25 if you installed the the framework before the IIS you should do an aspnet_regiis -i anyway it could be the case that the app pool is crashing for some reason, you can try to deploy to a kind of empty /"hello word" app and chack if that runs in the IIS –jack.the.ripper Aug 10 '13 at 3:12 Just an idea.. Perhaps you're using the wrong application pool. –Bjoern Aug 11 '13 at 8:33 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote The IIS ( concrete the IIS-Worker process) needs the appropriate rights to access the directories. For some strange reason, Default.html works, but Default.aspx throws a 404. I have tried these: There's http://serverfault.com/questions/96713/aspx-throws-404-the-resource-cannot-be-found another virtual directory that contains an older version of the application and that one just works. Remember to completly reset IIS by using command: iisreset. Try running aspnet_regiis.exe -i -enable to make sure that ASP.NET is registered with IIS and that it is enabled as a web extension. share|improve this answer answered Jul 27 '10 at 17:20 Greg Bray 3,14031839 add a comment| Yo

I created a Virtual Directoy and added Default.aspx to the 404 error default documents. I have a simple default page in the directory. When I try to navigate to the site from a client pc I get "404 - file or directoy not found" but it works on the serve pc via localhost. Also, when I remove default.aspx from the defualt documents and navigate, I see the file listed but get the same error when I click on it. For some reason I can not get the Default.aspx page to run. I am sure this is file or directory something simple because I have done the same thing on several XP machines and had not problems. 0 Question by:Cldela0 Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 30 Best Solution byBrad Howe Hi, Things we can try to find out what is happening. 1. Recreate a new Virtual Host. This may correct your settings if the host was configured before .net was added. 2. In order to configure IIS 7.0 to serve .aspx pages, you must install the ASP.NET feature for IIS 7.0. To install ASP.NET, Go to Control Panel/Programs and Features, then select "Turn Windows Features On or Off". Once you're into the Windows Features interface, navigate to Internet Information Services | World Wide Web Services | Application Development Features | ASP.NET and make sure it is checked and click OK. 3. trouble on production. But after I deployed it to production, every URL below the top-level immediately returned a 404 HTTP error. Other applications worked fine, but the new one gave me lots of trouble. This took a bit of work to figure out, but here's the answer. The key is that my production server was Windows Server 2008 which runs IIS 7.0. The test server, it turns out, is running Windows Server 2008 R2 and IIS 7.5. Rick Strahl ran into this a year ago and talked about the solution on his blog. It turns out that his solution applies in this case as well. The solution is to add the runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests key to the web.config:
