up PHP - Display a 404 Error without redirecting to another page up vote 8 down vote favorite 5 I want to display a 404 Error if a user reaches a page that exists but I don't want him/her to see. I don't want to do redirect (that would cause the address bar to show the link of the error page in php redirect 404 the address bar) like the following: if ($this_page_should_not_be_seen) header("Location: err.php?e=404"); Instead, it should seem like the page really doesn't exist, without having the URL in the browser's address changed. php custom-error-pages share|improve this question edited May 31 '15 at 8:29 asked Jun 21 '12 at 11:57 Dilip Raj Baral 1,16851542 1 and what's wrong with htaccess? –k102 Jun 21 '12 at 11:58 1 That's the job for .htaccess, not for PHP file... or, for both of them, if you just redirect everything to index.php, but still, you need .htaccess or access to httpd.conf. –Griwes Jun 21 '12 at 11:59 1 you mean your browser shows the 404 error rather than a custom 404 page? you can redirect it to some page with doesn't exist in actual. –Ummar Jun 21 '12 at 11:59 @Ummar That would work, but I was wondering if there is formal way to do this.. –Dilip Raj Baral Jun 21 '12 at 12:15 1 best formal way I think is .htaccess –Ummar Jun 21 '12 at 12:20 | show 1 more comment 5 Answers 5 active ol

Now http://forums.devshed.com/php-development-5/fake-404-error-unauthorized-access-307140.html i dont want unauthorized people to see what pages there are. So if someone accesses a page without proper authorization i want a 404 error to be displayed. That way an 'attacker' cannot know the difference between a page that does not exist and one that he's not allowed to go. How do i do that? I imagine that it has something to do with the header function but the following two lines don't do what i want. PHP Code:header("HTTP/1.0 404 Not Found"); PHP Code:header("Status: 404 Not Found"); Can someone help me with that? Thanks! Troubleshooting » Fake 404 spam links hacks Fake 404 spam links hacks jefferisp7 @jefferisp7 8 months, 2 weeks ago I just started getting notices from Google about 1000's of 404 pages suddenly appearing on my client https://wordpress.org/support/topic/fake-404-spam-links-hacks/ site between 4.4.1 and the update 4.4.2 I did find on the pages, http://php-dev.livejournal.com/60484.html hidden links like: . The links are obviously 404 because the pages don't exist. I've run scans of the plugins and pages. I found a few outdated codes on legacy.php but all the plugins passed. I also got this warning: hashes-4.4.2.php missing The file containing hashes of all WordPress core 404 error files appears to be missing; modified core files will no longer be detected and a lot more suspicious strings will be detected As well as some unknown files like the following, which I assume are plugin additions? wp-includes/rss-functions.php Unknown file found in wp-includes/ or wp-admin/ directory. wp-includes/class-wp-customize-section.php Unknown file found in wp-includes/ or wp-admin/ directory. wp-includes/class-wp-widget-factory.php Unknown file found in wp-includes/ or wp-admin/ directory. wp-includes/class-feed.php Unknown php fake 404 file found in wp-includes/ or wp-admin/ directory. wp-includes/pomo/entry.php Unknown file found in wp-includes/ or wp-admin/ directory. wp-includes/pomo/streams.php Unknown file found in wp-includes/ or wp-admin/ directory. wp-includes/pomo/translations.php Unknown file found in wp-includes/ or wp-admin/ directory. wp-includes/pomo/mo.php Unknown file found in wp-includes/ or wp-admin/ directory. wp-includes/pomo/po.php Unknown file found in wp-includes/ or wp-admin/ directory. wp-includes/post.php Unknown file found in wp-includes/ or wp-admin/ directory. wp-includes/class.wp-styles.php Unknown file found in wp-includes/ or wp-admin/ directory. wp-includes/http.php Is there a way to find out where these bad links came from, because it sounds like the exploit that was reported with 4.4.1? And is there an easy way to do a global clean of the pages? 1000 404's is really bad news… The site actually has only about 10 pages. Also, I found errors in something that looks like shared/email? - fail…. The site has no active comment section. Only a Simple Contact form. I have a script..This sends a 404 message. I would expect it to redirect to the ErrorDocument, but it doesn't Is this what is suppose to happen? or am I missing a piece to the puzzle?
