and 9443, but I can not get it to join my Active Directory Domain. Using the wizard or the management page only yields an "Error. Enabling Active Directory Failed". Not much help there. If I go on the console and run the command "vpxd_servicefg ad wrie username 'password' domain" it still fails, but at least the "join active directory" operation failed for the entity with the following error message. it gives an error of "VC_CFG_RESULT=302(Error: Enabling Active Directory failed."I was able to add all the hosts to AD and even a VM running Win 2K8. I just can't get the vCenter Server Appliance to join. I tried Googling for some solutions, but haven't come across much of anything useful. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! 13204Views Tags: none (add) This content has been marked as final. Show 8 replies 1. Jun 12, 2013 11:23 AM (in response to jp3457) You can find a video describing a way to successfully setting up the appliance at vSphere 5.1 vCenter Virtual Appliance and vSphere Web Client Video Tutorial Series and avoid issues (including connecting to the AD).André Like Show 0 Likes (0) Actions 3. vmwareJonathan Medd During the setup wizard of the vCenter Server Appliance I experienced an error at the step to make it Active Directory Enabled. In this the format of the specified computer name is invalid vcenter 6 instance I received the below error: Failed to execute '/usr/sbin/vpxd_servicecfg vcenter the format of the specified computer name is invalid 'ad' 'test' 'sunnydale\vcentersvc' CENSORED 'sunnydale.local'': VC_CFG_RESULT=309(Error: Invalid hostname. FQDN is required for joining a domain.) Initially I idm client exception: error trying to join ad, error code [11] thought it may be something to do with how I was specifying the AD domain name or username. Didn't get very far with that, so I skipped https://communities.vmware.com/thread/448858?start=0&tstart=0 it for the time being and decided to come back to it later. This setting can later be configured from vCenter Server, Authentication . Attempting the same from there results in a similar error: AD Authentication settings Error: Invalid hostname. FQDN is required for joining a domain. What the error (obviously) actually means is that the http://www.jonathanmedd.net/2014/02/vcsa-active-directory-enabled-fails-during-setup-wizard.html hostname specified on the Network page is the full FQDN and not a standalone hostname. So I had not specified that correctly as part of the initial setup. Not this: Rather this: Also, make sure you have created a DNS A record for this server. Once that was resolved I had some further issues with the formatting of the Domain and Admin User, in the end the below worked, i.e. username in the format [emailprotected] . (Note I had been experimenting with a change to the administrator account rather than the vcentersvc service account which is why that is different below, I don't think that was the cause of the issue) Post navigation ← PowerShell Tail Equivalent Synology DSM: Enabling iSCSI Multiple Sessions → 7 thoughts on “VCSA: ‘Active Directory Enabled' Fails During Setup Wizard” RSW says: July 9, 2014 at 10:03 pm Thank you!!! FQDN is required for http://kunaludapi.blogspot.com/2014/09/vcenter-appliance-55-ad-authentication.html joining a domain.) Source: VMware KB I was in the https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/347087-vcenter-server-appliance-to-active-directory process of rebuilding my virtual lab, while setting up vCenter appliance 5.5 I got above error, that not able to connect to active directory. As I knew we can reconfigure this option later, I proceeded with rest of the setup and decided to active directory troubleshoot it later and removed check box from active directory using back button. Everything got configured correctly except AD authentication, as I have habit to document everything and already created seme on installing and configuring vcenter appliance 5.5. After comparison I found what mistake I did (missed one step) while configuring vcenter appliance which the format of can be seen here. I didn't provided FQDN. Which was not allowing me to enabling active directory and it was failing. VC_CFG_RESULT=302(Error: Enabling Active Directory failed.) To change host name I puttied into vcenter appliance and used below commands to verify and correct it. echo vc001.vcloud.lab > /etc/HOSTNAME hostname vc001.vcloud.lab Then verified it using commands that I able to see FQDN correctly. hostname cat /etc/hostname I also made DNS entries (forward and reverse) for vCenter appliance (Best practices link) Then checked name resolution from appliance itself. Restarted appliance to reflect changes. And confirmed that Hostname is showing correctly. And in the last, reconfiguration AD authentication was successful (under reconfigure vcenter server\Authentication) Restart appliance one more time to take effect for changes made to AD configuration, After all this done When I tried to login with vmware vsphere web client. I faced another issue Failed to connect to VMware Lookup Service https://vc001.vcloud.lab:7444/lookupservice/sdk - SSL certificate verification failed. For this I

2 Chipotle OP Jfrapp Jun 13, 2013 at 11:13 UTC Another item to consider along the lines of L.S. - there are quite a few plugins/add-ons for VMware that may require the Windows version of vCenter. While most are working on web based or appliance versions, there are still quite a few that want a Windows based vCenter server. 2 Anaheim OP jp3457 Jun 13, 2013 at 11:32 UTC I finally got the appliance added to the domain. Had to change the host name, then switch primary and secondary DNS, and then it worked. But even after that I ran into a few other issues and just not getting a warm-fuzzy feeling from it, so I'
