This prevents Notes from launching on the next attempt with the following error message: "An error was encountered while opening a window." This error occurs far more frequently if you quit or exit Notes prematurely or abnormally. Cause The Notes code is consistently unloading nnotesmm.exe. Ntaskldr.exe should unload as expected although it may stay loaded if Notes has crashed. Answer The issue involving the unloading of nnotesmm.exe was reported to Quality Engineering as SPR# HNAA6E89C5 and was addressed in Notes/Domino 6.5.6. If the ntaskldr.exe is not unloaded as expected, use the operating system's Task Manager to end the process (press CTRL+ALT+DEL --> Task Manager --> select ntaskldr.exe --> End Process --> close Task Manager). Fix details: SPR# HNAA6E89C5 Refer to the Upgrade Central site for details on upgrading Notes/Domino. If you haven't yet upgraded and experience this situation, contact Product Support to see if a hotfix is available for your particular configuration. **************************************** NOTE: Occasionally, anti-virus software monitors database access by using NSF_HOOKS or EXT_MGR. Usually, these process are launched as Windows Services so when these processes hold memory, you cannot launch the Notes client even if you log out of your Windows account. You must restart the operating system or service application using the net stop/net start command or services.msc. Background Nnotesmm.exe monitors shared memory usage (the number of OSInitRefCount) so that unaccessed shared memory is not released by the operating system. Premature shutdown sometimes fails to decrease the counter so nnotesmm.exe falls into an infinite loop which causes the error above. "An Error Was Encountered While Opening A Window" errors Published 24/11/2008 By Aleksander Nordgarden-Rødner Lotus Notes has a plethora of more or less (usually the latter) legible and understandable error messages. One of them I encountered the other day. The situation is as follows: a client of mine told me Notes http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21224056 had crashed, and she was now unable to restart Notes due to a rather cryptic error message: "An Error Was Encountered While Opening A Window". Now if we only knew why. The problem, it turns out, is that a process called https://www.razumny.no/2008/11/resolving-an-error-was-encountered-while-opening-a-window-errors/ NTASKLDR is still running. Knowing this, we also know how to resolve the problem. The solution is to kill the process called NTASKLDR. Open the task manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC, open the processes tab, find the process and end it. RANKIN (MIS) (OP) 7 Dec 04 22:01 Hi, and thanks for stopping by!I and a few of my users are experiencing a problem where Lotus appears to crash if closed abruptly. When you try and re-open Lotus Notes (6.5) it greets you with the message "An error was encountered while opening a window" and the program will not start. The only way to start Notes again that I have found is to reboot the machine, very annoying as you can imagine! If anybody has experienced this problem, or has a solution I'd love to hear about it!cheers,Rankin RE: Error encountered while opening a window..? pmonett (Programmer) 8 Dec 04 08:50 This sort of thing normally happens when Notes crashes and you try to reopen it.You do need to reboot, or use the ZapNotes tool to deal with the remaining objects that are still in memory.Pascal.
