An Error Encountered While Opening A Window Notes
the Notes client ERR_DESK_CANT_OPEN_WINDOW; error occurred; open a window; cannot open Notes; cannot start Notes; cannot launch Notes; ND6; ND7; ND8; error opening window Technote (FAQ) Question When a customer attempts to start the Lotus Notes client, the following error message displays: "An error was encountered while opening a window." Rebooting the operating system (OS) does not resolve the issue, nor does a clean uninstall/reinstall of the Notes client software. Answer This error is known to occur when other software is interfering with the launch of Notes. Examples: In one case, further troubleshooting of the Windows OS indicated a problem with the video drivers. Rebooting the OS in Safe Mode with Networking (use F8 key continuously when the OS is booting up until the option appears) and then launching the Notes client allowed it to launch without any trouble, indicating the problem was specific to the OS. The following screen shot shows the odd behavior of the client upon launch, which was a helpful clue that the video drivers were involved. Reinstalling the drivers resolved the issue. In another case, a 3rd party program called Turbo Gold, which is supposed to speed up replication, was the cause of this issue. This error is also known to occur in Notes 6.x if you attempt to launch Notes when it is already open. This issue does not occur in more recent Notes releases. a window Synopsis When I exit notes and then run notes again, I get the following message: "An error was encountered while opening a window" and then Notes crashes. A reboot generally fixes the problem, but it seems as though a process isn't terminating properly and there's state information being kept in a file somewhere. Suggested Causes and Solutions: Solutions I solved the problem by removing all *.nsf files and dsk;ndk files. Didn't have the time to check which one of them causing the problem.David Engqvist on 10/05/2004 07:39 At command prompt run "nsd -kill" from within the notes directory.Tommy Sellers on 10/13/2004 09:47 If notes crashes, goto taskmanager and end notes application, http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21269027 and then goto processes and end tskldr.exe and restart notes.Ed Delaney on 10/22/2004 22:23 If notes crashes, goto task manager and end the Lotus Notes application and then goto processes tab and highlite ntaskldr.exe and end the process and then reopen Lotus Notes.Ed Delaney on 10/22/2004 22:31 I had Notes Minder running when Notes caused this error. I terminated Minder, ntaskldr.exe, and was able to restart Notes.Bill on 01/18/2005 09:27 All good suggestions. We've also http://www.codestore.net/errors.nsf/all/55A66EE5C5510C1086256F1E004A382F?OpenDocument built our own "Notes Restart", since even NTaskldr, which is supposed to track Notes client crashes, sometimes fails. We just make a list of all EXEs in the Notes folder & try to kill them, then restart Notes. However, I came into this thread looking for something slightly different (same error though). We had the same error in our environment but only when some users started Notes. Ended up being user error. We had put an icon in the Quick Launch bar. Since those are single-click icons, users get confused & double click. If you time it slow enough, the second click really counts & tries to start a second Notes instance, which we all know won't happen. Same might happen if there's desktop icon that's set to react on single click.Volker on 02/02/2005 13:13 OK..Volker - wrong. Period.sd - typical windows/intel BOFH response.Ed Delaney - what planet is he from ?Tommy Sellers - absolutely correct.Engqvist - you gotta be kidding me. If he's not kidding, his advice isn't wrong, it's dangerous.Umm no on 02/02/2005 21:31 I deleted 2 process through task manager. NTASKLDR and NSL.stanh on 02/04/2005 07:23 Hi everyone!I am running a program called ClientSync in an effort to get Notes (6.0.3) to run on Citrix (Metaframe XP Pres Server 1.0, on Win2003). Science and then the IT industry. Sunday, July 29, 2007 An error was encountered while opening a window! http://notestoneunturned.blogspot.com/2007/07/error-was-encountered-while-opening.html I've written previously about pathetically inane error messages that lurk in dark corners of otherwise good software, waiting to spring out at you when you least desire them.Today's beauty http://recover-email.blogspot.com/2014/08/how-to-fix-lotus-notes-error-message.html is one that lives in the current latest release 7.0.2 of the IBM Lotus Notes client (imminently to be replaced by the brand new Notes 8 client based on the an error IBM Expeditor/Eclipse architecture). This is all that you're told. No more, no less! So, there was an error, was there? And one that was encountered while opening a window, was it? What a masterpiece of exposition! What design committee thought up that one?If you get yourself into this predicament, you'll find that this artfully vague message will be regurgitated every time an error encountered that you try to relaunch the Notes Client following the crashed session. As it turns out, the solution is quite simple: open the Task Manager and cancel the ntaskldr.exe Notes task.Would it not be easy to modify this error message to suggest such a remedy? No, no, of course not: let's leave it there to bamboozle even more users!MESSAGE FOR ALL SOFTWARE DESIGNERS & DEVELOPERS:Why not eliminate the stupidities in your old code, and not just plow ahead creating new code?UPDATE:There's more info about this situation in IBM support Technote 1224056 which states this "was addressed in Notes/Domino 6.5.6. It is reported as no longer occurring in the Notes/Domino 7 and 8 releases." ... I'm not too sure about that! Time will tell, eh? While Opening a Window" Home » Fix Lotus Notes error message » How to Fix Lotus Notes error message "An Error Occurred While Opening a Window" To err is human, but at times software applications can render errors to. And regular computer users can understand this pain well. One or the other app shows an error message once in a while, no matter which operating system you are working on. Today we are going to talk about one such application, which is the IBM Lotus Notes. While working on IBM Lotus Notes app is otherwise smooth, there are certain error messages which appear on your screen once in a while, and thus hinder your work. Among several other reasons, mostly either the internal settings or database corruption is held responsible for these error notifications. Tools like Fixup, NT Check Disk Utilities, Update and Compact prove helpful in dealing with these errors. But exceptions always prevail. Even after using these tools some errors don't go away, which results in poor productivity. In order to tackle such issues and ensure proper results, one needs to use a Lotus Notes Recovery Software. This software helps in efficient recovery of Lotus Notes database. To further understand the aforementioned problem, let's consider the example below: You run the Lotus Notes application. It opens successfully. However, when you try to open a new window within the application, an error message shows up. On every attempt the following message shows up: "An Error Occurred While Opening a Window." This message prevents you from opening a window in Lotus Notes application. Cause of the error: The primary cause due to which this message shows up is that some processes are still running the background and thus starting them all over again is not possible. Resolution: Don't worry! The above problem can be resolved. All you need to do is to perform the following steps: (1) Got to the ‘Start' menu and select ‘Run'. (2) In the Run box, type this command: c:\program files\lotus\notes\nsd.exe -kill Hit "Enter". The "Killnotes.exe" file will kill all the background processes which are running in the Lotus Notes database. (3) Now launch the Lotus Notes application. There might be a chance that the above method fails to resolve the error and the Lotus Notes application continues to display the same error message. In this situation, you'll have to use
