Access 97 Install Difficulty on Windows XP - System.mdw P: n/a Tim Marshall I've just received a new computer with Win XP Version 5.1.2600. I want to have Access 2003 and Access 97 running on this, so I did some googling on cdma and it seems I must install these versions of Access "sequentially", ie, A97, first. When I use the Office 97 installation cd, pick my choices, I end up, at the end of the installation, an error telling me the system.mdw could not be created. When I click OK on this, the installer tells me to run the work group administrator on restart. Well, I can't. I'm trying to create a system.mdw. Can someone please help me. The googling I've done on 97/2003 co-existence didn't seem to pick up this problem or I missed it. Thanks very much in advance. -- Tim - http://www.ucs.mun.ca/~tmarshal/ ^o< /#) "Burp-beep, burp-beep, burp-beep?" - Quaker Jake /^^ "What's UP, Dittoooooo?" - Ditto Nov 13 '05 #1 Post Reply Share this Question 1 Reply P: n/a Tim Marshall Well, I figured this out and am going to reply to it for the sake of Googlers to come. My machine: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600], ie sp 1a Pentium 3.2 2.0 Gigs RAM Server: MS Server 2003 (not sure if this had anything to do with it) On installing Office components from Office 97 cd, the following error messages are encountered: On completion of the installation, a message box entitled "Workgroup Administrator" appears with the message: "An error has occurred at changing workgroup database" On clicking the OK button, another message box with the same title appears: "Setup couldn't create a system.mdw file. After setup is complete, reboot your computer then run the workgroup administrator before you run this application (-1011)." From my investigation of the issue, it appears Office 97 is (obviously) not equipped to deal with the file and security arrngement of Windows XP. System.mdw is usually created in the c:\windows\system32 directory. I assume program files and windows directories are set up in Win XP such that alteration or creation of files within them requires some kind of coding from the client application (in this case

Problem installing Access 97 with Windows XP - "error occurred changing the workgroup database" P: n/a richard I have a licensed MS Office 97 package which I have moved from PC to PC over the years and I have just bought a new machine with XP Pro on it, the latest release. When I install Office, I get the error "an error occurred at changing the workgroup database" and "setup couldn't create a https://bytes.com/topic/access/answers/201419-access-97-install-difficulty-windows-xp-system-mdw system.mdw file....run the workgroup administrator before you run this appliaction (-1011). When I run the workgroup administrator (something I have never had to do before) it simply tries to remake this file and the first error appears again. The rest of Office installs fine. When I try to launch Access, I get the message "microsoft access couldn't find the file .../system.mdw. This file is required for startup" (path removed for brevity). And when I look for a file system.mdw on that machine, there is none there. Can anyone help me with this? TIA. And when I look for a file system.mdw on that machine, there is none there. I had this vexing problem last Fall. From what I can gather on posts vaguely related to this issue since my porblem, is there is a problem when you've got more than 512 megs of RAM on the machine that causes this. Quite simply, if you're getting this error, XP is not allowing Access to create a system.mdw in the windows/system32. What I did was turn off the read only property for this directory and then select everything inside the directory and do the same. I believe I was then able to create a system.mdw file in there using the workgroup administrator. If that doesn't work, you can do what I did for a while, which was to use the workgroup administrator to create a system.mdw somewhere lee besides windows/system32. I

I called Microsoft and they would not help me because they no longer support 97. I think I'm using Windows XP. I don't know how to tell. Sorry. The problems all started yesterday when I needed to create a calendar in Publisher. In doing so, it gave me the message that the wizard was not installed and to use the set-up disk and reinstall it. OK, so I got my 2003 disk and put it in the computer. We began to get these messages about some LIS tool that holds the updates or changes to the system? All still confusing. At any rate, my husband and I just figured the best thing to do is to uninstall 2003 and then reinstall it and get the wizard then since there was no option to add the wizard any other way. But we found it could not be uninstalled! We tried everything and finally found a post that told us how to uninstall it and Office 97 since we couldn't find out how to get the wizard from there also. Now, I cannot reinstall Office 97 so that I can reinstall 2003 and am getting these errors once the 97 installation gets to the end: Error1: An error has occurred at changing workgroup database. I clicked OK Error2: Set up couldn't create a SYSTEM.MDW file. I clicked OK Error3: Set up has encountered a problem updating your system registry. I clicked OK Error 4: vbe.dll was unable to register itself in the system registry. I clicked OK Can anyone help me? It seems a simple thing
