You most likely see this problem when attempting to send an email with an attachment, and send or open anencrypted email, all of which will require Outlook to have access to your published certificates. Open ActivClient, and if it takes forever to see them, or doesn't see your certificates at all there is an easy way to resolve this. Remove and re-insert your smart card into the reader. Re-open ActivClient and if it sees your certs right away, try resending the email, and it should go granted you have your certificates published properly. & add a sender's certificate to the Address BookPKI can be used with Outlook 2011 to send secure, digitally encrypted email. This document outlines the steps to add a sender's certificate to the Address Book. https://kb.wisc.edu/uwdid/page.php?id=24530 If there is no digital certificate available for the sender or recipient on your workstation, Outlook cannnot send a signed or encrypted or in some instances view an S/MIME message. In this scenario, the following error message may be displayed. "Microsoft Outlook : An error occurred in the underlying security system. The keyset is not defined." "Microsoft Outlook : Can't open this item an error - your digital ID name cannot be found by the underlying security system." As a workaround, you can use the following instructions to manage certificates for Outlook 2011. Open a digitally signed message from the recipient. In the Info Bar at the top of the message, click the "Details" button, and then click "Add Encryption Certificate to Contacts". The certificate is stored with your in the underlying contact entry for this sender. If you do not already have this person saved as a contact, Outlook automatically creates a contact entry. For more information see: Outlook Add a sender's certificate to the address book In addition, verify the "Send digitally signed messages as clear text"setting is enabled. Choose "Preferences..." in the Outlook menu bar Choose "Accounts" Click the "Advanced..." button Click the "Security" Tab And verify the "Send digitally signed messages as clear text"setting is enabled.
