Recently, however, all users except the Administrator are not able to logon to the server. When logging on locally, it gets to the point in the logon when the desktop should appear, but there is just a blank screen. We can press control alt delete and bring up the Task Manager or logoff. If I try to start Explorer from Task Manager at that point, I get a message that the permissions may not allow this program to run. I have checked permissions of Explorer.exe, and it indicates that the SERVER\Users group has Read and Execute permissions on this file. There are no Deny permissions on this file. When logging on thru RDP, I get an error stating "You are connected to the remote computer. However, and error occurred while an initial user program was starting, so you are being logged off." The administrator account can log on without problems either locally or via RDP. I have checked everything that I can think of, but have not been able to resolve this issue. Does anyone have any suggestions on things to do to try and resolve this issue? Windows Server 2003 R2 The Problem: When logging onto the Citrix server, the student/staff user receives the following error dialogue. You are connected to http://www.c-amie.co.uk/technical/citrix-user-program-starting-error/ the remote computer. However, an error occurred while an initial user program was starting, so you are being logged off. Contact the system administrator for assistance. The logon attempt http://64.38.51.10/error-occured-initial-user-program-starting-ftopict27818.html then exists and returns to the thin client shell. The Fix: The problem is due to a permissions error in the Citrix server. In the instance observed the permissions an error error was due to a restricted (through being missing rather than denied) permission flag on explorer.exe as a file, the error is not inherited from the %SYSTEMROOT% folder (c:\windows\). It is possible that any other user experiencing this error could be experiencing it based upon a bad permission set on another file. If this proves to be the an error occured case, I suggest that you perform a permissions reset on the Windows folder at first, and if that doesn't fix it, System32 and finally the entire Windows folder and all sub-folders. To correct the fault: Set the file security permissions on explorer.exe as “Read & Execute” and “Read” for both of the following accounts. %LocalServer%\Users %LocalServer%\Power Users Please note: These accounts are Local Server accounts and NOT domain accounts and must be sourced from %servername%\%account% instead of %domain%\%account%. No restart is required to complete the reconfiguration. I have added a Windows 2003 Terminal Services server to our domain (it's just a member server, not a DC) and am trying to allow some users to access applications remotely. When the users log in they get the following error: You are connected to the remote computer. However, an error occured while an initial user program was starting, so you are being logged off Does anybody know how to resolve this? I've spent hours using Google to find solutions and scanned through forums such as this to no avail. I've looked at all areas I can find where applications are specified to run but can't find what it causing it. If I add the users to the Administrators group on the TS box they can log in, so I assume it may be permissions somewhere? Thanks in advance. Go to registry and check on permission in this key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options, right click, then permission, add system and everyone, give full control.
