I tried this on several differenct devices (iphone 4s, ipod 5, ipad 2). The only way I could get this to work was to log in to appleid.apple.com with my apple id. Add your alternate email address . A verification email will automatically be sent. Go to you email account, open the verification email from Apple and follow the instructions to verify your email. Once you have completed these steps go to Settings>Messages>Receive At>Add Another Email on your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad. Enter your verified email address and hit return. While this doesn't solve the problem of being able to verify directly from your ios device, it is a work around to allow you to add additional emails for iMessage.
