Problem installing Access 97 with Windows XP - "error occurred changing the workgroup database" P: n/a richard I have a licensed MS Office 97 package which I have moved from PC to PC over the years and I have just bought a new machine with XP Pro on it, the latest release. When I install Office, I get the error "an error occurred at changing the workgroup database" and "setup couldn't create a system.mdw file....run the workgroup administrator before you run this appliaction (-1011). When I run the workgroup administrator (something I have never had to do before) it simply tries to remake this file and the first error appears again. The rest of Office installs fine. When I try to launch Access, I get the message "microsoft access couldn't find the file .../system.mdw. This file is required for startup" (path removed for brevity). It worked fine on my last machine, which ran XP Pro Service Pack 2 (2002). And when I look for a file system.mdw on that machine, there is none there. Can anyone help me with this? TIA. From what I can gather on posts vaguely related to this issue since my porblem, is there is a problem when you've got more than 512 megs of RAM on the machine that causes this. Quite simply, if you're getting this error, XP is not allowing Access to create a system.mdw in the windows/system32. What I did was turn off the read only property for this directory and then select everything inside the directory and do the same. I believe I was then able to create a system.mdw file in there using the workgroup administrator. If that doesn't work, you can do what I did for a wh
Posted on January 22, 2010 by martcj Before Access 97 finishes installing it complains that it cannot create c:\windows\system32\system.mdw and to open the Workgroup Administrator to create a system.mdw file. When I tried to create a system.mdw file it failed with the error ‘An error has occurred at changing workgroup database.’ I was never able to create a new system.mdw file. Instead I copied one from another PC and used that. However, when I opened Access 97 I then started to get an ‘Out of Memory’ error. After some reading I https://bytes.com/topic/access/answers/207092-problem-installing-access-97-windows-xp-error-occurred-changing-workgroup-database found that the ‘Out of Memory’ error was caused when a device had more than 1GB RAM and was running the Microsoft Jet Database Engine version 3.0 and 3.5. Microsoft released Microsoft Jet Database Engine version 3.51 which is available here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/172733 Ensure that you have Microsoft Office 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2) installed before installing the latest version of the Jet Database Engine Share https://martcj.wordpress.com/2010/01/22/access-97-cannot-create-cwindowssystem32system-mdw-file/ this:FacebookTwitterEmailLike this:Like Loading... Chris_Elliott Guest About ten years ago, I used started using Access to create a database for I book I am writing. http://www.office-forums.com/threads/reinstalling-access-97-on-a-vista-pc.797018/ (Installed from Office 97 Professional Edition.) I just reinstalled Access every time I got a new PC, and carried on with the database. Recently, when I got a new http://www.pcreview.co.uk/threads/access-97-installation-error-in-windows-vista.3413573/ computer running Vista, I used LapLink PC Mover to transfer files and programs across from my old PC. Everything worked OK for a while, then Windows Vista started encountering an error major problems, and eventually, after exhausting all the other options, I had to reformat the HD and reinstall it. However, when I tried to reinstall Access from the Office 97 Professional Edition CD, I got a series of error messages with a Workgroup Administrator heading. "An error has occurred at changing Workgroup Database." "Setup couldn't create a SYSTEM.MDW file. an error occurred After setup is completed, reboot your computer, then run the Workgroup Administrator before you run this application. (-1011) I tried running the Workgroup Administrator, and got two error messages: "Couldn't find the file c:\windows\system32\system.mdw. This file is required for startup." "An error has occurred at changing workgroup database." I'm now using Open Office, and don't want to upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Office Professional just to get a working version of Access, but at the moment I can't access my own database. Can anyone tell me how to reinstall Access 97 on a Vista machine, or what to do so that I can open the . mdb file for my database in another program. (Open Office Base will connect to it, but only to do very limited editing.) Thanks in anticipation of help. Either install Access 97 as an administrator of manually create a System.MDW file in a less locked down location and join it using the Workgroup Administrator tool. -- Rick Brandt, Microsoft Access MVP Email (as appropriate) to...
