To manage a change of the service account, SQL Server stores a redundant copy of the service master key protected by the machine account that has the necessary permissions granted to the SQL Server service group. If the computer is rebuilt, the same domain user that was previously used by the service account can recover the service master key. This does not work with local accounts or the Local System, Local Service, or Network Service accounts. When you are moving SQL Server to another computer, migrate the service master key by using backup and restore. The REGENERATE phrase regenerates the service master key. When the service master key is regenerated, SQL Server decrypts all the keys that have been encrypted with it, and then encrypts them with the new service master key. This is a resource-intensive operation. You should schedule this operation during a period of low demand, unless the key has been compromised. If any one of the decryptions fail, the whole state

All servers are SQL Server 2012 I currently have a database which has two Linked Servers to access two other databases. From these 3 databases I have setup 5 view which are referenced in a stored procedure. When trying to run the stored procedure it was failing, I opened the procedure and tried to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/28542537/an-error-occurred-during-service-master-key-decryption run it manually to see what the issue was and received the below error: Msg 33094, Level 16, State 1, Line 16 An error occurred during Service Master Key decryption I then tried breaking it down and found that I was receiving this error when trying to reference the views that where using the Linked Servers. I tried simple selecting the top 1000 rows of these views and strangely enough it will return the values 1 out of 5 times and give the above error the rest of the time. I've tried Googling the issue but a lot of the issue are referenced when a database has been restored or moved, nothing of the sort has happened with mine. it was suggested to run the below to see if there was an error and I've had none. ALTER SERVICE MASTER KEY REGENERATE edit: I've also created a new accounts and relinked both servers in an attempt to test/fix the issue. The accounts are SQL Server Authenticated accounts with db_datareader rights to the databases Can anyone suggest what I should perhaps look at, I'm a little lost. Thanks in advance for any help or advice. sql sql-server sql-server-2012 share|improve this question edited Feb 17 '15 at 12:

I can remotely connect to the default MSSQLSERVER instance through SSMS, but I cannot connect to either of the additional named instances (\INSTANCE01 or \INSTANCE02). For example, if I try to connect to "sql.domain.com", I can successfully access the default instance on the remote server. If I try to connect to "sql.domain.com\INSTANCE01", I get an error stating"A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server".HOWEVER - if I try to connect to "sql.domain.com\INSTANCE01, 49301" (where 49301 is the TCP Port for the TCP/IP Protocol for this SQL Server instance), I am able to successfully connect. This leads me to think that t
