Uninstalling using the Ubuntu Computer Janitor tool then reinstalling (using the correct license key) used to work on another PC but not now on this one, perhaps since some Ubuntu security updates were installed. There is an obvious conflict with the system that now makes Avast home for Linux unusable. Please help if you can. Avast "Invalid Argument" Error Started by muhib1996 , Nov 28 2011 01:23 AM Please log in to reply #1 muhib1996 https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=57812.0 Posted 28 November 2011 - 01:23 AM muhib1996 Member Member 91 posts I am a new Ubuntu user, the version is 10.04 LTS. I have just installed latest Avast! in it and updated. But now, it is showing a message: "An error occurred in avast! engine: Invalid argument". In some forums, someone told to run this command in terminal:sudo sysctl -w kernel.shmmax=128000000 kernel.shmmax = 128000000I ran it and it was fixed. But when I restarted the computer, the same error appeared http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/310742-avast-invalid-argument-error/ again. I ran the command again and worked. But why will I run that command each time I start computer. I want a permanent solution, please help!!! 0 Advertisements #2 calvert Posted 28 November 2011 - 05:18 PM calvert Member Member 58 posts i can't give you a fix for this, but i can offer this http://linuxmafia.co....php?page=virus and there is a free linux antivirus in your repositories, if you feel you need one (and i do know that avast for linux is free as well), its called clamav http://www.clamav.ne...packages-linux/ in my experience, as long as you only install software through your repositories and not from the web or untrusted/unknown sources then there is little to no chance of an infection, 0 #3 muhib1996 Posted 29 November 2011 - 03:32 AM muhib1996 Member Topic Starter Member 91 posts I also installed ClamAV. But when I opened it, everything was ok. But in status, and in "Virus Definition" it was showing "None". There was no option on how to download or get Virus Defnition, I tried to scan files but the scan completed in less than half seconds. So I doubted and deleted it. If you can help me, then I will install ClamAV. And I would also like to know what antivirus do you use in your Ubuntu? 0 #4 calvert Posted 29 November 2011 - 06:25 AM calvert Member Member 58 posts sorry on both counts, i don't use ubuntu
then it stopped. Now when I try to start it I get the following error message. launch it after that. Did some googling and someone suggested deleting a file called "400.vps" in the ".avast" folder. I did just that and avast! was able to launch again. However, the same error occurs immediately after the virus definition update is performed. There is an error with the signature file. Hmmmmmm. What happened to quality control nowadays?Update: I resolved the update issue. Run the following command.commandrine@bridge:/$ sudo sysctl -w kernel.shmmax=128000000kernel.shmmax = 128000000commandrine@bridge:/$ I combined this command and the avast! update command together in this script to simplify matters. You no longer need to launch the avast! GUI to start the update. Download it here. Posted by commandrine at 9:22 PM Labels: Hack, Malware, Tools 30 comments: AnonymousApril 12, 2010 at 8:52 PMSuper !
