S-L1980 Level 1 (0 points) Q: An Error Occurred While Installing IOS 5.1.1 Ipad 1 Hey everyone, It seems that a ton of people are having this problem and have not found a way to fix it. I want to see if someone out there actually has the answer. Details:IPad IOS 5.1No number in error message on Ipad while trying to update directly through the ipad. No number in error message when trying to update through ITunes but instead of getting the error occurred message I get a file corrupt while downloading. I have reset the Ipad to factory settings. I have tried to install the update file from a downloaded file after trying everything else and it still did not work. I have also tried to install file in safemode. Any advice would be very much appreciated! iPad, iOS 5.1 Posted on Jun 27, 2012 10:38 AM I have this question too Close Q: An Error Occurred While Installing IOS 5.1.1 Ipad 1 All replies Helpful answers by Texas Mac Man, Texas Mac Man Jun 27, 2012 11:24 AM in response to S-L1980 Level 8 (46,611 points) Jun 27, 2012 11:24 AM in response to S-L1980 See iOS: How to update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touchhttp://support.apple.com/kb/HT4623If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect to your computer & click on the "Update your device using iTunes". I said safe mode but I meant DFU mode. I believe iTunes called it safe mode. I have turned off my firewall and anti-virus program and I am still receiving the file corrupt message on iTunes. Also, it still will not update through the iPad general>update method. time out, not start at all, or sometimes throw an error message saying "Unable to Check for Update. An error occurred while checking for a software update." or "The network connection could not be established." If you're having trouble downloading iOS 5.1 from Apple's servers, try these fixes: Reset Network Settings on iOS Device: Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings Clear Hosts File: Look at your hosts file for anything blocking Apple's servers and comment them out, this is mostly relevant to jailbreakers and if you see "Error 3194" Change DNS Servers: Adjusting DNS on either the computer you are downloading from or iOS device if using OTA can resolve the issue, instructions https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4062180?tstart=0 on how to do so are below Changing DNS seems to be the most reliable method, here is how to do so in iOS and OS X. Changing DNS in iOS Tap on Settings, tap on "Wi-Fi", and tap on the blue arrow next to the router name Under "DHCP" tab tap on "DNS" and replace with: "8.8.8.8" for Google DNS, or "208.67.222.222" for OpenDNS Tap the Back button and attempt to use OTA again Change DNS in OS X Open System http://osxdaily.com/2012/03/09/cant-download-ios-5-1-try-these-fixes/ Preferences from the Apple menu Click on "Network" and then click on ‘Advanced' in the lower right corner Click the "DNS" tab and then add a new DNS server by clicking the "+" icon, adding either "8.8.8.8" for Google DNS or "208.67.222.222" for OpenDNS Drag the newly added DNS server to the top of the list, click "OK" then close out of System Preferences On a Mac you may need to follow this up with flushing DNS cache, so open the Terminal and type the following: dscacheutil -flushcache Now try opening iTunes and updating, or try to download iOS 5.1 firmware directly from Apple again. An unrelated but pleasant side effect of changing DNS can be that your wi-fi speeds increase, give it a try and let us know if it works for you. Thanks to Aygie and Sayed for the DNS tips! We have a fix By Sébastien Page, Mar 9, 2012 Tweet 19 Comments I've been trying to update my iPad over the air to iOS 5.1 ever since it was released this last Wednesday. Unfortunately, it kept throwing an an error error saying "Unable to Check for Update. An error occurred while checking for a software update." At first, I assumed that Apple's servers were being slammed, but it's now been two days and I still couldn't update, constantly getting this "unable to check for update" error. So I decided to plug my iPad in to update it the good old way, you know, using iTunes. But iTunes was not very cooperating either as it kept throwing this error: "There was a problem downloading the software an error occurred for the iPad. The network connection could not be established." After a bit of googling, I found the solution to my problem: All you have to do is change the DNS settings on your iPhone, or iPad. To do so: Go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Tap on the blue " i " icon next to your connected network Under the DNS settings, delete everything and type 8.8.8.8 (Google public DNS) Go to Settings > General > Software Update You should now be able to download and install the update Now this doesn't tell me why this problem occurred in the first place, but this fix sure worked well as I was able to update my iPad within seconds after that.
